One of our readers, Jennifer, dropped me a line this month, asking for help in attracting both practical and financial support for her family who face a very difficult situation following a tragic accident suffered by her son Carl, three years ago. From the very first month of launch, ExpatWoman has supported charitable initiatives through the site, and sometimes through the events, but we don't usually make collections through the coffee mornings; sadly there is no limit to the number of worthy causes and we prefer to leave you to make your own choices. Thus I hope you will not mind this exception and will feel as moved by Carl's mother, Jennifer's story as I was.
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Take My Junk's simple mission of collecting unwanted furniture, clothing and electrical goods from commercial and residential properties to sell and raise money, to buy food and bare essentials for the workers who built Dubai.
In recent months they have collected over 200 truck loads of unwanted goods, now Take My Junk is spreading the word into schools and colleges, looking for help in creating collection points, collection facilities and volunteers to help in the worthwhile initiative. Already there's been a great response from students who are keen to volunteer their services.
If you want to arrange a collection or help in any way, contact 050 1794045, e-mail takemyjunkUAE@gmail.co

START is the outreach art education programme founded by Art Dubai and the Al Madad Foundation charity. The aim is to establish arts programmes across the Middle East lead by artists for the wider education of children. The main focus of activity is to reach children in need but of course the definition of need shifts per country and here in the UAE the focus if very much on the government schools and children with special needs, including those who have been physically abused. Over the past year START has initiated projects for children and young adults in Lebanon and the UAE including weekly art classes and workshops for those with special needs, art internships for students and the successful ‘Give Dubai a Hug’ day that saw over 50 families painting for charity.

The Emirates Arthritis Foundation (EAF), the Middle East’s only patient support group, based in Dubai was launched in April 2006. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for arthritis sufferers through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis. We achieve this by organizing patient education sessions throughout the Emirates, establish community programs such as aqua-aerobics and yoga, and importantly we have an endowment fund for less privileged patients so that they are able to receive the premium health care services that they deserve. It has been a busy month for Helping Hands and all their volunteers - have a look to see what they have been up too. Roger and Elle Trow have lived in the Gulf since 1980 and witnessed many changes in the lifestyles of the residents, but the conditions under which the lowest paid workers live and work has always saddened them. In October 2006, they determined that they would "make a difference", and from this resolve was born "HelpinghandsUAE". If you would like to see how you can help please visit - www.helpinghandsuae.com
