Deborah and her family visited the UK Boarding School Exhibition in February 2009, she started boarding school in Year 10 in September 2009

When Deborah first suggested she would like to go to boarding school in the UK to study her GCSE’s, we were taken aback. We knew she was unimpressed with her school in Dubai, but boarding seemed a bit extreme. No-one in our family had ever gone to a boarding school and we had never considered it for our children. However, as she pointed out, her father had been the first in the family to go to University, our branch of the family were clearly meant to be the pathfinders!

We did a lot of research on the internet and spent a very useful day at the UK Boarding School Exhibition in Dubai run by Sue Anderson Consultants. The SAC Education Consultant patiently drew Deborah out of herself and encouraged her to discuss her interests and passions and then suggested some schools who could offer her exactly what she needed to grow as a person as well as academically. This is often lost by some schools here in Dubai (and elsewhere) that our children need an all-round education with encouragement to try new things and even make mistakes – school is not just about collecting qualifications.

We flew into the UK and visited her top 4 choices over the period of a week, which was exhausting, especially for my daughter, who spent each day with complete strangers “tasting” a typical day in classes and at lunch with her peer group and meeting lots of teachers. But it was necessary to gain a clear picture of each school, so very useful. She chose Haberdasher’s School for Girls in Monmouth for many reasons, not least of which because the Head of Music knew the names of her favourite heavy metal bands and suggested she listen to one she had never heard of. They turned out to be amazing!
