Clean Start, Clean Skin!

As mums, we know how difficult it can be as a teenager, especially if you experienced skin breakouts or acne.  Puberty is simply a time when hormone levels are fluctuating and surging through the body causing change.  Most commonly, teens will begin to notice sebaceous activity which triggers an increase in oil production and hair growth.

From the skin health experts at Dermalogica, Clean Start skin care range for teens introduces a simple cleanse, tone, moisturise routine for a lifetime of healthy skin habits.  Clean Start is not an acne line, but the products do assist in regulating oil levels and controlling breakouts.  Ingredients and formulas are fresh and free from irritants such as artificial colours and fragrances.  Additionally they are free from strong odours and irritants like SD alcohol, and we don’t ever test on animals, because it’s just not nice.  Clean Start is an effective skin care line that understands teenage skin and the problems typically associated with it.

Puberty can be a confusing time, and media can often contribute to this uncertainty with mixed messages.  Don’t believe the hype!  We will help you bust some common myths about teenage skin (and some of them may even surprise you).

• diet/stress
Although food and stress do not directly cause acne, they may contribute to its development.  High stress levels trigger adrenaline which causes hormone levels to escalate and thus a breakout may appear.  In the same way increased sugar in the diet requires
• SPF
Sophisticated sunscreens will not clog pores; in fact new formulations actually benefit the skin and may help control oil levels.  Encourage your teen to protect against sun damage now to prevent scarring and premature aging.
• Tanning
Skin exposed to UV light for an extended period of time can increase the number of skin cells.  An increase in skin cells can further block pores, allowing acne-causing bacteria to breed resulting in breakouts.  Additionally tanning also puts you at risk of skin cancer.
• Moisturiser
Most teenagers avoid moisturising because they think that it makes their skin greasy, but in fact not moisturising makes the skin dry and triggers excess oil production as compensation.  A good moisturiser should be oil-free, light-weight, an possibly also contain oil-absorbers to keep the skin looking matte.
• Product sharing
Adult skin care products contain heavy moisturisers and often anti-aging ingredients that are problematic on a teenage skin.  Keep your products for yourself and get your teen their own; this will give them ownership and they will be more likely to stick with their skin care routine.

Despite some eye-rolling and verbal rebuttals, teens do value your opinion!  Try sharing your skin problems with your teen while travelling to school or doing a household chore together.  This relaxed environment allows for conversation and they will be more receptive to your advice, instead of a dreaded lecture!  Let your teen know that their skin problems are temporary and that with a proper skin care routine, their problems may be improved.  You may also suggest a consultation with a skin care professional, which will give them the opportunity to ask for an outside opinion (which a teen sometimes is more responsive to) to guide them down the correct road to skin health.
