Did you know that one in five people have allergies?

  • Do you experience itching in your eyes, nose or throat? Wheezing, cramps in your stomach, diarrhea or bloating? If so, you could have allergies.

  • Allergies are caused by an over-reaction of the immune system to a particular substance or allergen. Allergies can be manifested as food allergies, respiratory allergies and drug allergies. Conditions such as urticaria (hives), eczema and contact dermatitis are also immune mediated diseases.

  • The immune system is made up of special cells that circulate throughout the body to defend it against foreign substances, such as viruses and bacteria. For people with allergies, the immune system is overzealous and reacts when they inhale, swallow or touch normally harmless substances, such as pollen or dust. This results in the release of chemicals such as histamine, which causes swelling, inflammation, and itching of tissues which is characteristic of allergies.

  • Making a diagnosis of allergies includes performing a complete evaluation that includes medical history, symptoms, and physical examination.

  • Diagnostic testing may include skin prick testing and patch testing. A blood test may also be done to help identify the substances that are causing certain allergies.
A food or drug challenge test may be done to diagnose food or drug allergy.
Allergies are not only treated by medication (that offer symptomatic relief) but by immunotherapy (subcutaneous injections given monthly or drops placed under the tongue several times a week) which teaches the immune system to become tolerant to the offending allergens. This way a reduction of symptoms is achieved, less medication is required and diseases such as asthma are prevented.

  • Food intolerance is more common than food allergies and it is estimated that about 45% of the population suffer from some form of food intolerance. The causes of food intolerance are not fully understood. Under normal circumstances antibodies combined with proteins in the food form immune complexes which are then eliminated. Patients with food intolerance have an accumulation of immune complexes in joints and the digestive tract.

Symptoms of intolerance are rashes, swellings of the skin, asthma, stuffy or runny nose, frequent colds and infections. If the gastrointestinal system is affected, symptoms such as colic, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, frequent mouth ulcers and reflux are present (irritable bowel syndrome).  Patients may have migraine, headaches, anxiety, depression, lethargy, impairment of memory and concentration. Symptoms may appear up to three days after eating the offending food .A simple blood test can identify foods that may be the culprit of the various symptoms.  Treatment is accomplished by elimination of foods that show an elevated level of antibodies for a certain period which can decrease the symptoms and the food can then be reintroduced.

We are the first center in the UAE to offer Cynosure's New Elite MPX(TM) Laser System to our patients.
  • We are  the first clinic in UAE to offer the newly introduced Elite MPX laser system by Cynosure, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of laser and light-based aesthetic treatment systems to our patients.
  • The Elite MPX, which incorporates Cynosure's patented MultiPlex sequencing technology, is a highly versatile laser aesthetic workstation that combines two gold standard wavelengths in one system: the 755 nm Alexandrite laser and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, with the capability of using them individually, switching between them, or blending them with the MultiPlex sequencing technology, resulting in customized hair, vascular, and anti-aging treatments to a wider range of patients of any skin type.
  • "We feel the classic Elite laser has always been the best laser for darker skin types 4 and above," said Dr. Radmila Lukian, Dermatologist at Dubai London Clinic. "Now with Elite MPX, sequential pulsing-whether it's Alexandrite/Nd: YAG or Nd: YAG/Alexandrite- will fine tune our treatments and eliminate the fine hairs. A laser that can blend wavelengths enables us to permanently reduce hair without hurting the skin."
  • "We are also excited to use the 18 mm spot size," Dr. Lukian continued. "At 2 pulses per second, we feel it will be one of the fastest lasers on the market and will become the standard in the industry."
  • Michael R. Davin, Cynosure President and CEO, commented, "We are very pleased that Dubai London Clinic will be using the new Elite MPX laser system and benefiting from the technological advances that are incorporated into it. In Dubai, where there is such a diverse patient population, the Elite MPX will help provide more effective treatments on difficult to treat skin types."

A Fish Out of Water…………….Culture Shock!
  • We may all be having it or have had it!

It’s that feeling of disorientation, loneliness, insecurity or confusion that we feel when we leave our own country …no matter how much we wanted to move and no matter how prepared we thought we were.

Culture shock, defined as the anxiety and feelings felt when people have to operate within an unknown culture, is almost like a silent sickness that afflicts the inexperienced traveler or the unwary expatriate. It can affect us any time and can come with any of the following symptoms : feeling out of control and unable to cope,  depression , homesickness, needing more sleep than normal, withdrawing from people, eating more or maybe eating less, lack of energy, stereotyping of and hostility towards the country you are in.

Feeling like a fish out of water can at times be overwhelming, isolating and very lonely.

Kalvero Oberg, an anthropologist described 4 stages of Culture Shock as a way to help us understand our feelings of uprootedness and lack of belonging:

    Honeymoon Stage

This stage is when there is a general excitement and euphoria on your arrival. There is a positive anticipation of everything you are about to experience. You might be eager to learn the language spoken and happy to embrace the many new challenges that confront you.

This stage can last for a short time for some and up to 12 months for others.

    Frustration Stage

Some of your initial excitement dissipates. Feelings of anger, anxiety and homesickness might creep in. you might reject your new environment and have a lack of interest in your new surroundings. Small things may begin to bother you and you might appear more irritable than usual.

    Understanding Stage

This stage arrives when you get a more balanced view of your experience abroad. You become more familiar with the culture, people, food and language of the host country. You will hopefully make friends and feel less homesick. You will overall become more comfortable in your new environment.

    Acclimatization Stage

In this final stage, you’ll be able to compare the good and bad of the host country with the good and bad of your home country. You’ll feel less like a foreigner and more like your host country is your second home. You might even laugh about the things that frustrated you at the earlier stage s of culture shock.

    So What Can Help Us?

Don’t Panic!! Please reassure yourself that these are totally normal feelings and nobody escapes them at some level.

Be aware of the feelings and go with them.

Fighting your feelings  is only going to increase them.

Acknowledge to yourself first that this hard, maybe more so than you thought and be reassured that it passes and is okay.

    Give yourself a break

Please don’t beat yourself up with the ' should be managing better statements’ as they only serve to put us down and don’t help at all.

We are all human and go through rough patches at times so allow yourself time to adjust and don’t expect too much from yourself when you are adjusting.

Try to stay as positive as possible by challenging yourself to find at least one good thing about your host country…this will hopefully lead to a ‘mood shift’ and in time things will become more balanced.

Focus on what you can control. There is nothing worse than that feeling of being out of control. Try to only focus on what you can change and take small steps first and then you can take the jumps.

    Ask for help

It’s a hard thing to do but you will be amazed if you bring up the topic of homesickness, how many others will be feeling it or have felt it too. Human nature always feels better when they can connect with others and not feel so alone.

Write it down – another great way to release feelings is by keeping a journal. Sometimes thoughts in our heads can be relentless so by writing them down, we are releasing some of that intensity and will feel a little lighter.

If you can, try and remember culture shock is a typical and very normal reaction to difference. While at times it can feel very overwhelming, it does pass and in time most people settle and the shock eases. If these feelings persist, please feel free to contact me at any stage and I will do everything I can to help.
