Acorn International- How To Choose A Moving Company
A little nervous about hiring some fly-by-night moving company to transport all your earthly possessions to a new home or using a company with expired trade license or worse still no license at all? Follow these steps to finding a reliable moving company and a little peace of mind; after all, moving is statistically the third most stressful time only after a family death & divorce no less!
The most important tip we can give is that you should avoid choosing a company at a short notice. This can leave you exposed to choosing a company without full research and often with compromise in selecting from available companies only. Usually an international move should be planned 8-10 weeks prior to moving and a domestic move 3-6 week beforehand. Unfortunately it is not always possible in UAE as moving happens quite suddenly here due to tenancy agreements, last minute fall fallouts with landlords and worse still redundancy at short notice.
Acorn Movers is an international shipping & forwarding company with head office in London. Our emphasis is on providing a quality service at affordable rates. We use international crew to pack & relocate shipments ensuring your consignment is dealt with care and to professional standards. In addition to providing relocation services, we are also able to provide short & long terms storage at our warehouse near Mall of Emirates. 1. Choose the kind of mover you need, such as a relocation service, interstate moving company, local mover, international mover, pack & pick service, household shipper or just transportation.
2. Talk to friends, neighbors and co-workers for personal recommendation and warnings.
3. Use community forums such as our very own Expat Woman to research on relocation experiences.
4. Call several of the recommended companies. Ask how long these companies have been in business, how much experience their packers and drivers have, if they offer storage and whether they are licensed.
5. Verify that the mover has a valid trade license and regulated.
6. Ask if the mover is a member of a trade organization. This would be helpful if you need to resolve a dispute.
7. Check with your local authorities and use search engines to see whether any complaints have been filed against the company.
8. Narrow your choice down to three companies and invite for survey and a quotation. NEVER agree to a mover who will not offer a free survey.
9. Visit the company’s local office/warehouses if possible. There are many companies operating from home and do not have the right resources. If you visit their warehouse, you would be able to see the level of work carried out by that company.
10. Most companies ask for a booking deposit. This is normal for them to engage their crew and resources. Ensure receipts are provided for each transaction.
11. Ensure you cross check items upon delivery. This is stressful and time consuming but necessary. Once the company has left premises, it is often difficult to resolve any grievance notified later.
