sorry have been out of uk for a few years, never had a card, but i thought that you have to fill in a form that would allow you to get some treatment when you travel from uk to europe, but that is only for uk residents, if you are living over here then technically you cannot do that. yes if you are living here and going on hols then you should purchase travel insurance. i have always done that just in case something happens.

I really think it depends per country. For me it's Holland and if I stay registered in Holland for Health Insurance only then I have to pay tax. We have a world wide health insurance so for us it doesn't matter where we are it will be covered anyway. But otherwise it will be cheaper to get a travel insurance if you are going abroad (take note that you normally can only use that one for a max. of 90 days in a row).
