Sitting at Manchester airport at the moment. This airport has remained open, despite the snow. It isn't owned by BAA... and I think the BAA is now part of some Spanish conglomerate anyway. The bosses will all be having a good laugh in Madrid. Snow? What snow?

@ Poohbear....
It seems to be the case. We can learn so much from just mainland Europe itself...Scandinavian countries seem to have it worked out, granted they are more prone to it. Oh well...that apart, it does seem though that BA in particular are prone to messing folk about.

Because they havn't put the money into infastructure like snow plows, how often do we get this weather in the UK? Hence lack of foresight. BTW i have been caught at JFK when it closed for bad snow and Toronto.

Yes... Inbound EK flight 'slipped' off the run way... and all the hopefuls who had gone from LHR to BHX to try to get out of the UK were trapped again as of course outbound was then cancelled... Tuesday I think it was?

Changing the subject slightly, I was told that an EK flight over run the runway at Birmingham the other day, due to the snow, anyone else heard this????

It does seem that the problems seem to lie with British Airways, my DH and DS flew in via Emirates with only a half hour delay. At least the BAA boss has said that he will not take his bonus this year!!!

I just can't get over the fact that all airports have ground to a halt! I mean, it's not like the UK isn't prone to snow, (Aviemore only closed its slopes in June for goodness sake) so why aren't the airports prepared?
example - Fire extinguisher? smoke detectors? fire alarms? oh no, we don't require any of those; you see, we haven't had a fire here in years!!!
They are just all so incompetent! The gritter was out one day gritting the road and the snowplough was out behind it pushing the snow (and grit) off the road!!! mmmm...they surely forgot their flask of coffee that day.
"the post offices are jammed" I'm sorry, but why has nobody informed them yet that it may be slightly busy in December?
Oh dear *sigh* what to do?
Rant over sorry

They are now booked on the same flight and I also heard via Sky News that LHR has opened the second runway this evening. Off to bed, night all....
I am happy to say my two landed in Jeddah on time this morning. We are all happy to be united for Christmas.
Really pleased Calicojack & Saltire your kids made it...
KCQ, I hope that your Kids are able to travel on their next scheduled flight - Best wishes to you and your family for a Happy Christmas and New Year.

My two are now finally on their way after having their flights cancelled twice, me being up all last night making new flight arrangements and them just getting to the airport by the skin of their teeth today, if the flight hadn't been delayed they may well have missed the check-in. Best of luck to everyone else.

Managed to speak to DS - They have both agreed that under the present circumstances that they should get to Terminal 5 earlier than later! I won't believe they are on the way until they are airborne.
Let you know how they get on...
Please to hear you have got one seat on a flight - good luck with the other
I can't believe this is happening!

I'll keep trying the kids in the hope they can contact BA and change flight dates, not much choice really since theirs are now cancelled. As for the debate going on about Heathrow Airport..... it is certainly the busiest airport in Europe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_passenger_trafficedited by KCQ on 21/12/2010
I can empathise with trying to contact the kids! Haven't tried my son - although will do in a moment. My daughter is 4yrs younger than her brother and is more organised! DH just sent a text, BA seems to be jammed!

I suppose it's too much to hope that tubes and trains will be running in SE England on Christmas Day? I see no point in hiring a car as I suspect it wouldn't have snow tyres or chains, which would be pointless for getting from the airport to my mother's place.
The main roads are absolutely clear it's only the tiny side roads that are still icy
