Nice of you to post cymraes so you make more people aware.

When ID cards were first introduced (3 odd ago??) I registered my child. All you had to do at that time was fill out a form for them. And it was only about 6 months ago that I found out rules have changed for kids under 15 (I personally do not think there was enough public info available for this particular rule change)

I went to register my child last month and it was a very quick and easy process but it did cost 270 AED!
but remember though the costs will be different as this is taken from last summer.

Thank you TSmith99 and SEY83 for your posts, it hasn't occurred to me to check the EID website as mine and DH's visas and ID cards are still valid for a while yet, I heard the information for the first time about children under 15 on the radio this morning, and as I'd registered DS two years ago I thought I would only have to do something about his ID card when he reached 15, another year from now.

I have called a few friends this morning with under 15's and they are also totally unaware of this requirement - so it appears that the message is just not out there, we all read the papers and listen to the news and I haven't seen any campaigns about it on advertising boards etc. So it seems that not too many people are actually aware. That's the good thing about EW, sharing info we've heard, hence why I posted it - better to share than to keep it to oneself eh?

if you read the paper here it is then.

Just to add my piece on this, I'm not sure how TSmith99 got her child re-registered, but I went through this with my daughter. As i had already registered her and didn't have a card, you have to now go to one of the Emirates ID centres (not the typing centres) with your child's passport and request that they retrieve the details of your child's registration. You cannot submit a new application as their records will now exist twice. Likewise, you cannot just ask for a renewal without a copy of the letter. I caller the Emirates ID helpline and they confirmed that this is the case and you have to have somebody go to one of the three Emirates ID locations to get this print out from the system.

its really easy for under 15s as you can do it, at any typing center, at least you dont have to go and do the fingerprinting etc. i knew that it was compulsory for them to have way back in the summer last year, my boys birthday is november so i got it done before he became 15 and so then he didnt need to go and get the fingerprinting done, which he will have to do next time around.

Thanks all for your advice, how were they going to let us know? DS is registered on their system but we have not been informed by the EIDA that we need to get him a card, so the only way I've heard about it is through word of mouth, not even my DH's company have issued any advice .... Why should I be so surprised. Most of my friends are unaware to this need to get a card for their children, as I've experienced this morning following my telling them!

i dont know why people are still uninformed about this, with all the talk about this then all you need to look is on their website, they are on the radio, its in the papers. yes ok companies should be informing, but as we know that doesnt happen here..... so why are you surprised, surely if you have lived here long enough you shouldnt be surprised... lol

http://www.dubaicityguide.com/site/emiratesid/EIDA_FAQ.pdf

this is one of the original documents detailing that under 15s had a fixed price as they were only enrolled in the census etc. REMEMBER THOUGH THAT THIS IS NOT THE CASE NOW, JUST PROVING A POINT SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THE CHANGES.

4. Is anyone exempt from registering?
All Emiratis (holders of valid Passport & Family Book) and Legal Residents (holders of
Valid Passport & Residency Permit), including their children, must register in person
with the EIDA. The identity card is mandatory for persons 15 years and above. While it
is not mandatory for children below the age of 15 to apply for the ID card, the EIDA
recommends issuing the ID card for children and for that made it very affordable “50
AED fixed” for their own benefit when services are enabled on the ID Card. Everyone
must register regardless of age to help in the census, where accurate census would be
provided to decision makers for better strategic planning for the UAE.
5. What is the fee for issuing an ID card?
The fee is Dh100 for Emiratis over 15 years of age for five years and it is free of charge
for Emiratis receiving welfare. As for those under 15 years of age the fee is Dh50 for
issuing the ID Card for five years (must be replaced when child becomes 15 years old)
and it is free of charge for Registering in the Population register without ID Card issuing.
The fee for expatriates is Dh100 per active year in residency permit. For a residency
visa valid for three years, the fee will be Dh300 in total. From the day you register for an
ID card and your visa is valid for two years and two months, the fee will be Dh300
because the two months are calculated as the third year (thus portion of the year is
considered as a year). Registration of children below 15 is mandatory but it is free of
charge, while an identity card can be issued for them and costs Dh50. Mandatory ID
Card Delivery service fee Dh20 shall be added.

no the rules have not changed since over a year ago. back in the beginning it was not required for under 15s to actually have an id card, then maybe nearer 2 years ago they changed that they do need to do the id cards etc. so this is not a new rule. 3 (or so) under 15s did not need a card 2 years (or so) under 15s do need a card. this has been around for over a year. so my point is that i am making is that its only in the news now because the deadline for id cards in dubai is a few days away, for under 15s you have till october, has been that deadline for a long time.

Just heard this on the radio, executive from the EID was being interviewed, so a quick post before the school run.

All children holding a passport in the UAE will need a physical EID card by October this year, if their visa runs out in 2012 you can apply for the card at the time of renewal:

We had registered DS when we got ours, but it now appears that he needs the actual card.

THIS IS NOT NEW.... right in the beginning like 3 years ago, all children (once they are aged 15 they are classed as adults) had to undertake a census survey but they physicially didnt get a id card and so they were not issued with an id number, the government then changed it a year or so ago saying that all children have to have an id card, so that they can allocate a unique number to each person living here, in the beginning they said that it would be 140 I think for the process then last year they changed the prices again for under 15s saying its the same as adults ie 100 dhs per visa year etc. everyone else has the deadline of 31st may then fines will come in, with under 15s you have had upto october to do it.
