I was surprised to hear it was a popular Oz saying. We grew up hearing "it went down like a p**k chop in a synagogue" and I still use the phrase although I try to be more PC these days. edited by Get me out of here! on 19/06/2012

My children do-but they learnt it-and a whole heap of expressions passed down through the family from a Cockney great-grandfather who had a very colourful way of expressing himself!

For her ...yes .. she did grow up on a farm in the back of beyond so maybe they use it a lot out there.

Well there you go, I will wait 'till she next says it and then tell her it's origin
@skykitty - she would be very upset at the older person bit as she is only 39

I was bored so I googled it (should be cooking dinner). Guilty of using the expression too though not sure I knew the origins stated here: "This expression is a truncated version of the longer and more widespread phrase be like a p*rk chop in a synagogue; this has been around since the 1950s. Since p*rk is forbidden food for Jewish people, to describe something as being like a p*rk chop in a synagogue means that it is highly inappropriate, embarrassingly out of place, and quite unwelcome. The Australian expression carry on like a p*rk chop has now shifted the focus from inappropriateness to foolishness" edited by wuffles on 19/06/2012

I got it from my Year 4 teacher, I believe it actually ends with "at a (insert religion here thats kinda controversial in this geographical area) Barbecue" hence the p)rk chops should not be there in the first place??? lol.... I think it's an "older person's saying" because I get strange looks but you're right, it does describe what we're talking about :P

No-it isn't-around 3 hours drive away at a guess-my brother is down there and hasn't posted anything yet so can't be too bad there
Thank you - that is a relief.

Just scared-but we live over two hours from the centre of the quake so it must have been quite something. Just wishing I were home to check the house for cracks and such-he isn't too clued up about such things!
