That is awesome! wow! Love the local marrow, too. Nothing looks prettier than those from Belgium or Holland, but I was reading a blog the other day about how tomatoes aren't really supposed to look perfect and red. Although they don't taste bland or GMO, I went out on a limb last year and bought some from Jordan at the Spinney's in Oud Metha...3dhs a kilo....and they were more pungent, like Roma. So good! Even the local organic veggies from Mazaraa (spelling?) at Waitrose are quite reasonable compared to imports. There are some things I ate a lot in the US but no longer buy because they are too expensive, so I have shifted my palette a bit.

Buy local produce is number 1. Veg is much much cheaper, meat as well. I buy per kg, and then divide it in batches and freeze. Chicken I buy frozen, I prefer that over fresh that I have to freeze anyway. I like tuna, and I like beans which usually come in tins. I bring my own lunch to work, like my morning eggs, buy milk in cartons as I am alone. Buy ocassional cereal and oats, but I stay away from pasta and rice sauces in jars. Anything processed adds to the bills!

Sounds like we have the 150/week menu! lol

Yeah lol why should I buy Dutch tomatoes for around 25-30aed per kilo if I can get them for 10 regionally! And what about Local marrow and aubergine, tastes really good and so cheap! I buy frozen chicken breast for 12.50AED per kilo. I'm not spending 25,- for fresh that I am going to freeze anyway lol. I have no problems with buying frozen meat if I am going to cook it with vegetables and rice. And beef I buy local or Pakistani for maybe 50aed for 1,5 kilo. It's around 5 aed per kilo cheaper than Australian or New Zealand meat. I love the Omani green beans and their cherry tomatoes are so tasty, but haven't seen them for a while. They were aed 6 while Dutch cherry tomatoes are aed8,5.. So this is how I maintain my low supermarket bills This week I spent little over aed 200 on 7 days worth of Iftar meals for 10.. Not bad eh?

we rarely go out to eat and I cook all my own food. Local veggies, oats, tuna...I am pretty redundant with my food as well.

Sorry for butting in--I calculated 135 dhs a week to feed myself for staple items. With condiments, it comes to about 150! Is it that weird?

Going on from the other thread regarding expenses.... could you post a typical weekly meal planner as i am shocked that you can feed yourself for 150 aed a week -even with only sticking to Union Co-op (my supermarket of choice btw).

TIA
