Thank you both very much for the additional info. Champagneblonde do you let your apartment out using one of those sites?I have looked at the hotels which do look gorgeous, but we would have to book 2 rooms with the kids so an apartment does make sense.
Thanks for the correction, CB, now I think of it, many years ago I stayed with a friend who lived in the 4eme, rue du pas de la Mule, which was in the Marais district, so Heaven knows why I thought the 11th for the Marais. Sorry for misleading you, OP.
We own an apartment in the 5th arrondissement in Paris which is 300 metres from Notre Dame & very central for touristique activities, as well as getting to & from CDG airport or Gare du Nord on public transport, so I totally recommend the 5th or 6th areas. The 11th isn't actually Le Marais, the 3rd & the 4th arrondissements are. Your cheapest bet will definitely be an apartment. Try haveninparis.com or parisperfect.com, but there are also many others. Paris hotels are over priced & really tiny. An apartment will enable you to save costs by getting groceries & wine from the supermarket & maybe cook at home one night. Also you can pretty much walk or metro anywhere, which is cheapest option. Enjoy such an amazing city & hope that helps!
Oh, and whatever you do, don't do as a friend of ours did and try to book a room at the "Hotel de Ville" - this is the City or Town Hall in France, not an hotel
Great links, and fabulous advice, thanks Simpleas! Now it makes more sense. My Paris search didn't seem to pick up those EW links, so much appreciated.
Have a look at this map - there are 20 arrondissements in Paris, the 1st one (Louvre) being right in the centre and the others working in a spiral outwards and round the centre, on the Left and Right Banks of the Seine, as you can see, so the 20th (Menilmontant) is the furthest away from the centre: http://www.planetware.com/map/france-paris-arrondissements-map-f-f20.htmWikipedia will tell you more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_arrondissementsI think there are ladies who have lived in/visited Paris more recently than I have who can tell you more about family friendly places, but on the other hand, on a nice day, it is perfectly possible to walk from one side of Paris to the other, taking in many sights. When our daughter was a baby, we used to stay in a self-catering apartment in the "Latin Quarter" , near the Sorbonne, which was lovely and peaceful and reasonably central. Seems to have disappeared now (the apartment hotel, not the Latin Quarter ). I love the Marais area (11th Arrondissement) but unfortunately it is so long since I've been to Paris that I wouldn't know where to recommend for a family to stay. I would suggest you decide which arrondissement you want to be in and then hunt for hotels/apartments on one of the many hotel sites. Here are two reasonably recent threads which might help you:http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=165756http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=180199Enjoy, wherever you decide on!
I am trying to find something family friendly and central if possible. I am really confused by the areas. We want to do the usual touristy things as this may be our one and only time in gay Paris and we only have 4 days.
