The Opening Date of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Has Been Confirmed

One of the most highly anticipated attractions in Abu Dhabi will finally open its doors this November, after over 10 years since it was originally announced.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi will open on November 11th 2017, top officials announced in the Capital to the world’s media this week.

“On the 11th of November, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will open its doors. And the world will see itself in this museum”, said Mohammad Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority and Chairman of the Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) at a recent press conference.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first of three new museums to take its place on the Capital’s Saadiyat Island; and it’s whopping 97,000 square-metre size will include 23 permanent galleries in 12 sequences, Gulf News reported.

Of course, the news of its official opening date has created a huge buzz across the media, social networks and for enthusiasts near and far.

Louvre Abu Dhabi is a universal museum, born of an intergovernmental agreement

Back in 2007, representatives of the city of Abu Dhabi and France signed an intergovernmental agreement that drew the framework for the implementation of Louvre Abu Dhabi, which includes loans from French museums for a decade.

Upon the announcement of the confirmed opening date, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Surpreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, tweeted in Arabic, English and French that ‘the UAE boosts its global cultural presence’ with the opening of the museum.

Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, who has been awarded the Pritzker Prize, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be a place of discovery, exchange and education – and will no doubt play a crucial social role in the United Arab Emirates.

The museum will house diverse collections of artworks, for the purposes of public display and scientific study. Plus, the museum will house major objects from the fields of archaeology, fine arts and decorative arts for all to see.
