Home Security in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is one of the safest places to live due to its relatively low crime rates. However, residents tend to become complacent and the attitude that “it will never happen to me” seems to be the norm.

No matter how safe the city is, it's important to remember that there are many workers here that do not make a lot of money and may turn to a life of petty crime to make a quick buck.

There are opportunists living here that will take advantage of you and your property if given the chance. While it is difficult to deter a professional burglar, many of the people that make a habit of breaking in are amateurs who look for easy targets. These opportunists are easily deterred by simple security measures. Here are some security tips for you and your family to begin making habitual use of.

1) Keep all important documents under lock and key in a safe place

If you do have a break in, your legal documents can be used in identity theft and even a marriage by proxy. Also, have copies of all your legal documents such as your passport, residence visa, Emirates ID and driving license. It is best to scan the copies and save them on your computer and also to have hard copies of these documents.

2) Lock your doors

Simple enough yet so many people forget to lock their doors when they go to bed at night. Make it a habit to do a walk about and check that all of your doors are locked. Burglars tend to seek out opportunities, such as unlocked doors and open windows as they make easy targets.

3) Lock your windows

Make sure that windows are not just closed but that they are also secured. Windows are an easy access point into your house.

4) Close the gate

When leaving your home, even for a short time, make sure that you close the gate behind you so that no one sneaks in while you have stepped outside.

5) If you have a spring-latch lock, make sure to dead bolt the door.

These locks can be opened in seconds with the use of a plastic card or a thin sheath of plastic.

6) Don't brush off losing your keys

If you lose your keys, make sure that you change the locks immediately.

7) Find a solution for doors that don't lock

If your sliding door does not lock, wooden dowling rods like broom sticks are good for jamming these kinds of doors closed.

8) Be cautious with large sums of money

If you are withdrawing a large sum of money from the bank, be very discreet about it. If you are bringing it home, make sure that you put it in the safe.

9) Call for help if needed

If you feel that you are being followed home, do not hesitate to call the police on 999. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

10) Teach your children the importance of being vigilant and locking up after themselves

This will teach them important life skills and get them used to being alert with regards to safety and security, especially when they go on holidays overseas to cities that are much more dangerous than Abu Dhabi. Keeping your home locked and secure will keep your family safe and will give you peace of mind.
