Meeting local artists in Abu Dhabi | Jennifer Simon

Joyce Milne met with local artist Jennifer Simon this week, Jennifer moved to Abu Dhabi from Dubai 2000, (having originally come to the Middle East while working for Emirates Airlines). Jennifer has always had a love of drawing and painting and in her free time went along to Jam Jar in Dubai, where she began to paint and explore the possibilities of developing a career as an artist. Jennifer is a stay at home wife and mum of two children aged 6 and 3, which is a full time job in itself, however she manages to fit in painting around her busy life, in her small studio at home.
Abu Dhabi Art
Jennifer says that every day she draws inspiration from her life here in the Middle East, and her canvases portray urban cityscapes, people living in our cities, iconic scenes from Abu Dhabi and faces depicting life here. Jennifer has widely traveled and she uses her experiences and her view of the world and its peoples to create a distinct multicultural theme, all subjects are brightly painted in a unique style, Jennifer’s works range from large cityscape murals for large projects and buildings to small commissioned pieces for private homes.

Jennifer told us that she is very involved in the local community, and looks to encourage people, both locals and expatriates - artist, sculptors, and ceramic artists etc to come together and become involved in an Art Community. With that in mind, she has been instrumental in setting up Art Night, which is a once monthly event, hosted at Café Arabia, where artists, designers and enthusiasts can come together to share their works and ideas. She is very interested in encouraging youngsters in particular, to use their imagination, to develop their creativity and be individual while portraying their ideas in their artworks.
Abu Dhabi Art
Jennifer regularly spends time on workshops with these young people, most recently she has been involved in been carrying out workshops for children at Al Ain Zoo Children’s Art Tent, an annual art project that aims to encourage young people to experiment with art, while having fun learning the basics of drawing and painting.

Jennifer has exhibited her works in Abu Dhabi, both on her own and with other painters,
her prints and paintings can be seen in Abu Dhabi at Café Arabia, Ushop – One to One, and Pats Art and Antiques.

It was a pleasure to spend a morning with Jennifer, she is bright, friendly and very enthusiastic about her work and her life here in Abu Dhabi. Her passion for painting and encouraging other people to bring out the artist in themselves is inspiring.
