These 5 Things Are a Must-Do for Any Job Interview

Finding a job in another country can be a daunting experience, but you shouldn't stress too much. You simply have to put yourself out there. 

Sure, it might take the prospective employer a week or so - and in rare cases, even longer - to get in touch with you with an offer, but with patience and determination, you'll succeed sooner rather than later. 

For many expats, the reason they have moved overseas is for their own or partner's job, so they would then be sponsored; but there's no denying that the process of employment in the Middle East can get a little tricky.

If you're currently on the job hunt, and feeling a little dismayed at the lack of progress, don't give up! You shouldn't let this set you back, and you must remain positive and think, what next? 

For when you get an interview, here's some must-do's that will no doubt help you to impress your potential new employer...

1. Turn up on time

Be punctual! It's as simple as that. The employer will not be impressed by someone who turns up late and has wasted their time. Aim to arrive 5 - 10 minutes early, which allows additional time for you to visit the restroom and calm your nerves. The consequence of being late could be that the interviewer becomes no longer interested and you risk your interview being cancelled or cut short altogether. 

2. Do your research!

Make sure you check out the company before your interview; what's their history, their work ethic, their mantra? This is such an easy way to help impress the interviewer, as it shows that you're well read-up about their company, their aims and objectives and how you as an individual would be able to fit into a company like their's. By doing this, you'll be prepared to answer their questions and you'll also, when given the opportunity, be able to ask them some questions about the company.

3. Prepare your responses

Try to find out from the hiring manager what sort of interview it's going to be; either one-on-one or a group interview. This way you can prepare more, you can then attempt to determine what sort of questions you are going to be asked, so that you can think about your answers. A good way to remember your responses is by putting it into a story form, which you will be able to pick bits out of to tell the interviewer.

4. Make a good first impression

Ensure you're dressed for success! Wear smart, neat and ironed clothing, keep jewellery to a minimum and try to avoid smoking or eating right before the interview. As well as this you need to be polite, offer warm greetings to all of the staff and greet them with a smile, eye contact and a firm handshake. You will also have to bear in mind that portraying your positive attitude and expressing enthusiasm for the job is vital. Your body language is also important throughout the whole duration of the interview, so have a solid posture, good eye contact, and avoid fidgeting and slouching as this can be distracting for the interviewer.

5. Take the time to say thank you after the interview

You can do this either by writing or sending an email, either one will make you stand out from the crowd. It will show that you appreciated their time for meeting with you, as well as reinforcing your interest in the position. This thank you can also be considered as an additional 'sales pitch', where you can take the opportunity to address any questions or issues that you thought of after the interview.
