Driving License in Baku

Expats are allowed to drive in Azerbaijan for one year using their British/UK or International driving license. Thereafter it is mandatory for them to obtain an Azerbaijani driving license. There is a process for getting the license and you will have to pass a test. Only a few individuals such as those with diplomatic passports are exempt from this process.

Young people over the age of 16 years will be able to apply for a motorcycle license, however you must be 18 or older to apply for a motor vehicle license. Expats who wish to drive heavy vehicles will have to comply with the age limits which are:

18 years – A, B, C category vehicles
19 years - BE category vehicles
21 years – CE and D category vehicles
24 years – DE category vehicles

This is irrespective of you having a license for these vehicles if you are under the particular age.

Expats who wish to apply for a driving license must present the following documents:

Medical certificate
Passport – translated and attested
Azerbaijani registration card
Receipt for a driving license fee

The applicant must complete a theory test. If he/she passes the theory they can move onto the practical test. If the applicant successfully completes both tests he/she can get his/her license on the same day. The driving licenses are issued electronically.

A driving license issued in Azerbaijan can be re-issued in the following situations, at the State Traffic Police Department:
• If the license is lost
• If the license expires
• If there were mistakes made when the license was issued
If the license can no longer be read
