Residents Visa and Work Permit information

US, Canadian and UK nationals may enter the country visa-free and stay for up to 30 days, however they must produce a proof of permanent residency in their countries. Other nationals will have to apply for a visa at a British embassy or consulate in their home or host country. Visas available are tourist, transit and student. For more information please visit here.

Permanent residency can also be applied for, if you have stayed in the country for at least 8 years. Please visit this site for more information, here.

A useful site to visit is caymanislands.ky, which goes into more detail on visa and entry requirements. You can visit the website here.

Accommodation

There are a number of accommodation types available for expats: resorts, hotels, villas, condos, family homes, townhomes and apartment complexes. Caymanislands.ky, the official site of the country, has a full listing of these properties here.

Rental properties usually come furnished however utilities such as electricity and water are paid separately. Real estate agents and classifieds are a good place to start in searching for accommodations.

Driving License

An international driving license can be used to drive legally in the Cayman Islands, for up to 12 months. An expat’s domestic license, from a country covered by the Geneva Convention Road Traffic Agreement, can be used for up to 6 months, and then converted to a Cayman Island license by taking an exam.

It is important to note that when a person becomes a resident they may drive on their domestic licence in the Islands for a period not exceeding six months. After or during the period of six months, the new resident may drive only after passing a prescribed written test, upon which he shall, without the need for a road test, be issued with a Caymanian driver’s licence.- Cayman Islands Traffic Department

Documents required

-          Current valid driving license

-          Proof of residential status

Healthcare

Medical facilities, private and government-operated hospitals, are located on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. An emergency, 24 hour 911 service is also available across the islands. However there is no national healthcare service; a comprehensive health insurance that covers air ambulance, is recommended as the costs can be expensive.

For expats working on the islands, health insurance is mandatory. This can be arranged with your employer, or if yourself if you are self-employed.

The standard of care is adequate, however more serious cases are referred to Miami, USA.
