Residents Visa and Work Permit information

Visitors from certain countries including the US and the EU may enter Czech Republic. Other nationalities must secure a Schengen visa from a Czech Republic embassy or consulate in their home or host country. The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has information on countries who require a Schengen visa here.

Schengen Visa Requirements (but not limited to):
  • an application form – completed duly and legibly, and signed (in case of children under 15, the application form should be signed by the legal guardian; in case of applicants aged 15-18, written consent of their legal guardian should be presented);
  • a national passport with UAE residence permit and the Emirati ID card, all valid for at least three months longer than the intended stay. The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, must be in a good shape and have at least 2 empty pages. The applicant needs to provide a photocopy of the identity page of the passport, the UAE residence permit and any previous Schengen visas from the last 3 years;
  • a recent passport size photograph (light background and neutral expression necessary, no head covering acceptable except for religious reasons; please attach your photo to the application using glue, do not staple!);
  • a letter from an employer and /or a sponsor stating designation, date of employment, and salary; if the reason for the trip is business, the period of stay, purpose of visit, and financial arrangements shall also be mentioned. The letter must have an original signature and a stamp; if the sponsor is a natural person (except for a family member), we recommend a verified signature or a common signature with the sponsor's passport copy attached. If the applicant is an owner of a company or a partner, original Company Trade License and a copy should be presented;
  • a proof of sufficient financial means to cover the period of your intended stay – preferably a bank statement for the last three months showing regular income. The bank statement must show the applicant’s name, and be stamped and signed by the bank’s representative. Please note that cash will not be accepted as a proof of funds;
  • a return flight ticket (at submitting the application a flight reservation will be accepted, the original may be required at the collection of the visa);
  • a confirmed hotel reservation for the whole duration of stay. The confirmation needs to be issued directly by the hotel/guesthouse and clearly state the visa applicant´s full name, dates of accommodation, the hotel address and contact details;
  • a travel insurance certificate for the whole period of stay, including the information on Terms and Conditions.The insurance should cover all medical expenses including emergency hospital treatment and repatriation for the period of your stay in the Schengen area (coverage at least 30.000 EUR). The travel insurance certificate shall be signed and stamped (original signature and stamp, not a scan or printout!) by the insurance company representative;
  • other original document(s) proving the purpose of travel, if applicable (e.g. an original letter from a conference organizer (identifiable company-sender fax or email accepted), a tour voucher, a medical report in case of medical reasons, official letters from receiving (and sending) institution if study reasons, a letter from the inviting person if visiting family or friends, etc.)
  • a detailed travel plan, if the applicant is travelling to more than one Schengen area country, including the information on means of transport (flight reservations, train connections, etc.) and accommodation (confirmed hotel reservations);
  • if an invitation verified by the Czech Immigration Police is presented, it can replace some of the supporting documents (financial means, accommodation).

Please visit the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs site for more details.

Accommodation

Hunting for accommodation in Czech Republic can be difficult; there are only a few quality yet affordable rentals to go around. There are many in the capital, however they can be quite expensive. Beyond Prague, it can be even more difficult.

Rental control, where the maximum price is set by law, poses a problem for owners, affecting the maintenance and the overall condition of the unit. Finding an apartment in good condition and at a reasonable price is elusive.

The Internet, newspapers, notice boards and personal advertisements, are good places to start looking for accommodations. Real estate agents is another way, as they will have rental listings.

Driving License

Visitors to the country can use their driving license along with an international driving permit to legally drive in the Czech Republic, however expats with a long stay visa may not use this method and must obtain a Czech driving license. It is easy for citizens of the EU to drive as they have a right (not an obligation) to request for a replacement license. However non-EU citizens will have to pass the theory and practical tests at one of Prague’s testing centres. There are test in English available.

You can find more information here.

There are dodgy deals that you can do with officials, many expats tend to take this route, however this is not recommended as you really should know the street signs and the way in which people drive.

Healthcare

The medical facilities in Czech Republic are up to Western standards and operates quite similarly. Public and private hospitals are also available, and they offer high quality services. European travelers may use the EHIC cards to get free or low cost treatments, while other foreigners are advised to secure a comprehensive health insurance plan. Payment in cash should be expected, not all hospitals will accept paying by credit cards.

Citizens, permanent residents, self-employed and employees of companies in Czech Republic are required to contribute to the public healthcare system that provides them health insurance coverage. For more information please visit here.
