Work Experience Focus

Work experience is great part of our GCSE course in year 10. The work experience is held for a week whereby the students will either go alone or with a few peers to experience work life as an adult.

The year group is advised to organise their own placement at a job of their choice in Dubai prior to the week of work experience. The jobs can range from a law firm to helping out on the beach; and is designed to be a choice for the student as they are recommended to choose a work environment that suits them and the career path that they are interested in taking.

If the student is unsuccessful in organising their own placement and has failed to bring in details of which the school can contact; Depending on a school, there will be jobs available by the faculty and your child may choose from them. The students are then to organise a meeting with their contactable mentor or boss to discuss timings, attire, and what to bring with them for the week.

The work experience takes a usual working week off the regular school timetable, so that the students are to experience work-life to the best of their potential. The mentor of the students will guide them with the necessary requirements for the day each morning. Then depending on the job, the students must fulfil the tasks by the set time. Work mentors are advised to guide the students as it is their first time at “work”. However, independence is necessary as the week is designed to help the students understand the meanings of deadlines and to work on independent learning skills.

My Work Experience By Tally S, Age 15

work experience in dubaiI was placed at ExpatWoman with one of my peers from school for work experience. We attended short meetings during the morning of each day, and then were completely on our own to finish the tasks set; except your mentor is always there if you need them. Yes, it’s a little bit nerve-racking when you first walk in the door. Yet, you soon become accustomed to the day and how things work. It was lucky for us that we chose ExpatWoman as we were soon to realise that writing articles for YOU! magazine in Dubai can actually be quite fun!

We were quite excited as we felt sort of grown up in a way. Also, the allowance of being able to wear what we wanted suited us very well too. Work life has its ups and downs. Yes you have extreme independence. Yet, the work load much different then at school. However, you do get to leave whenever you want if you're hungry. Whereas, at school you’re just longing to hear that bell ring so you can run to the cafeteria and get your lunch!

I really enjoyed my work experience at ExpatWoman, and if you're in to writing I’d definitely advise it to you too!

I have heard some awesome stories of work experience, like going on a photo-shoot to Burj Al Arab with a professional photographer. Plus, some not so good ones, like sticking labels on 200 USB’s for a whole day. But work experience is all up to you. You get the choice of where your placed. You get the independence that some of us longed for. And you are awarded with the benefits that it provides, if you work hard.

Overall, work experience is a delight to do; and I, personally would definitely do it again. Especially for ExpatWoman!
