What is UltraLASIK?
Reshaping your cornea alters the focusing power of the eye, allowing you to become less dependent on glasses or contact lenses. UltraLASIK is the creation of a flap in the front of the cornea in order for the laser to reshape its interior. Traditional LASIK, as practiced in most other laser vision centers, uses a device called “microkeratome”, to create this flap. With over one hundred times the accuracy, UltraLASIK creates the flap with micro-precision using highly sophisticated IntraLase® laser.
UltraLASIK is a same day procedure – you usually enter and leave the laser centre within hours of the procedure. In experienced hands the procedure typically takes 6 minutes for each eye.
Benefits of UltraLASIK
• Safety - as it is a blade free procedure, it eliminates the risk of major blade related complications.
• Use of disposable instruments for each eye significantly reduces the already rare risk of infection.
• Better Outcome - Demonstrated worldwide and at Sharif Eye Centers, UltraLASIK recipients consistently obtain better levels of vision beyond 6/6 or 20/20
• Wide Range of Candidates- Substantially higher level of accuracy allows a larger number of patients previously unsuitable for traditional LASIK surgery because of thin corneas or high prescriptions.
• Reduced Risk of Dry Eyes
• Lower Enhancement Rates
• Rapid Restoration of Vision (within hours of surgery)
• Highly Predictable
• Both Eyes Can Be Treated the Same Day
• Minimal Discomfort
• Wider Range of Correctable Prescriptions +5.00 to -15.00 Diopters
• Treatment of Astigmatism up to 6 Diopters
Am I a candidate?
Probably YES, if you:
• Are over 18 years old and have had a stable prescription for 1 year
• Have healthy eyes with no diseases (e.g. cataract)
• Are within the range of correction:
Shortsighted - UltraLASIK has been shown to be effective for a wide range of myopia up to –15 diopters in selected cases. The level of treatment is highly dependent on your corneal thickness and pupil size in dim light.
Farsighted- UltraLASIK has also been shown to be effective for farsightedness correcting up to +5 diopters.
Astigmatism - Levels of astigmatism up to 6 diopters can be treated safely and effectively. At Sharif Eye Center we have expertise in treating higher levels than this and have developed novel methods. Before recommending UltraLASIK , a consultant surgeon will need to perform a thorough ophthalmic examination including a number of tests to ensure that your eyes are healthy and that you are a candidate for treatment.
An UltraLASIK Walkthrough
Before Your Procedure
We recommend that you bring someone with you on the day of surgery and advise you to wear something comfortable as there is no need to change your clothes. You will be given a sedative to help you relax. Anesthetic eye drops will be placed in your eyes.
UltraLASIK Procedure
Prior to the procedure to each eye, the laser is calibrated and new disposable instruments are prepared. Topical anesthetic drops are used to numb your eye and after the area around the eye is cleaned and prepared, an eyelid holder is used to prevent you from blinking
The IntraLase® laser creates thousands of tiny bubbles to create the flap at a specified depth in the cornea for each eye.
The patient is then moved to the WAVELIGHT 400HZ Excimer Laser. The flap is then carefully lifted and the laser is used to reshape the inner cornea according to your individual prescription or wave front. You will be asked to gaze at a flashing red light during the procedure. When the treatment is completed, the flap will be replaced and allowed to dry.
You will be given protective eyewear (such as dark glasses) to prevent you from inadvertently rubbing your eyes. You will then be seated in a waiting room, where your operated eyes will be examined before you leave the center.
Your Follow-up Care
You will be seen for follow-up consultation soon after surgery and periodically thereafter. Your vision will be evaluated and your cornea re-measured using the same instruments as before. The duration of these visits is much shorter.
