Parents around the world owe a lot of gratitude to the Australian children’s group, The Wiggles. The dancing and singing quartet have made meal time fun again.
Every parent dreads meal time – it’s the time of the day that their child is in control and parents try everything to keep food off the floor and in their child’s mouth.
Enter The Wiggles. With hits such as Hot Potato, Fruit Salad, Chew Chew, Chew and Vegetable Soup, The Wiggles made healthy eating fun.
Throughout the two-decades they have been performing and entertaining children worldwide, The Wiggles have shown an ongoing commitment to ensuring that healthy messages about childhood nutrition are provided to young children and their parents and carers. They believe in promoting healthy eating behaviours in young children in an entertaining way.
“Meal time is a big event for a child and we have written many songs about eating such as Hot Potato, Fruit Salad, Chew Chew Chew and Vegetable Soup! One of the sources of my inspiration is my own three young children,” says Anthony Field (blue Wiggle). “I look at the things that are part of their everyday life and can be inspired by that.”
Since releasing their first album in 1991, The Wiggles have captivated preschool-age kids and equally delighted parents around the world with their catchy songs and lively family shows.
The Wiggles are easily identified through their trademark skivvies: Anthony Field (blue) Murray Cook (red), Jeff Fatt (purple) and Sam Moran (yellow). Three of the founding members, Fatt, Cook and Field, have a degree in Early Childhood Education – Sam Moran joined the group several years ago replacing popular wiggle Greg Page, who left for medical reasons.
As a children’s entertainment group they redefined and rewrote the book on how children should be entertained and educated through song and dance.
The Wiggles have even set up a healthy eating website giving parents and children tips on nutrition.

• To encourage healthy eating habits in children offer small serves of food. Your child can always ask for a second helping.
• Healthy eating can be promoted through offering a variety of foods to children from a very young age.
The Wiggles also suggest parents keeping children involved in planning meals. Take children shopping, meal planning and cooking can help develop healthy eating habits by promoting a positive attitude to a healthy diet. They suggest thing such as asking young children such as getting spoons out of the drawer or asking them to stir a bowl can help develop their understanding of a nutritious diet.
To make meal fun The Wiggles also encourage parents to prepare meals with their children.
