There's never been a better time for a trip to the dentist!

Amanda proves how importanat a routine visit to the dentist can be

I was thinking that I had been given the short straw in reviewing Dr Michael’s Dental Clinic. Everyone I know is apprehensive about going to the dentist and I got the scary visit. But I know the importance of dental health for me and my family so I went down to the very charming clinic in Jumeirah and was greeted by the friendly staff and the calm atmosphere. There really was nothing to be scared of.

Dr. Michael Formenius is a charming man who immediately put me at ease and before I had chance to talk about anything had me relaxing in the dentist chair with my mouth wide open, ready to take a look at what I have been hiding behind my tight lipped smile.

I found out that Dr. Michael now has 3 clinics one in Jumeirah 2, near to Emirates Bank on the Al Wasl Road, the second in Um Seqeim, again off the Al Wasl Road with a Children’s Dental Center next door.

I first had some X-rays, which I had seen before at other dentists, but he took some photographs of my teeth with a special camera which focused on my individual problem teeth.  They were rather scary photos and so I won’t show them here but it got the message across that I need to start to take action.  Dr. Michael said he prepares for each of his patients a road map of where he would like to get to over the coming years.  Still in the chair looking at the screen above my head while Dr. Michael reviewed each tooth pin pointing with the curser where I had issues. I could clearly see and understand where the problems were.

Dr. Michael talked to me about getting into the habit of regular visits to a hygienist rather than a dentist for cleaning my teeth.  He advised that hygienists focus on the cleaning better whereas generally dentists want to get on with the more interesting dental treatment.  He showed me a very nifty device for cleaning between my teeth (pictured right) which I could buy at most pharmacies and even some supermarkets, or from their reception.

He talks very convincingly about harmonising the whole face with a beautiful smile and rather sheepishly admitted he has an extraordinary talent in this area which he has developed over 25 years.  And then he showed me what he could do for my rather sad and lop-side smile.

On my second visit to Dr. Michael’s I dropped into Dr Michael’s Children’s Center – and what an amazing place.  Difficult to believe, I know for a dentist’s surgery, but true all the same.  The colour scheme is bright green but the first thing I noticed was the smell of green apples.  Nothing like the memories that I had as a child of a dark and dingy waiting room being terrified of the dentist and that over-powering antiseptic smell.

All around the common seating areas and in the consulting rooms there are lovely soft toys and children’s activity areas.  In one of the consulting rooms there is a small lounge area for parents and children to seat while waiting for their turn in the dentist’s chair.  There is a beautiful fish tank which I’m sure would fascinate children and parents alike and an outside area with small tricycles for the littlies.

Consistent with next door, Dr. Michael’s Children’s Center has advanced technology and the dentists have been trained in laser dentistry – this is amazing for children as it is – wait for it – pain and injection free!  The receptionist lady described having a filing as having your tooth brushed with a paint brush.  No injections required.

There are baby changing facilities in the bathroom and ipads available for the older children to borrow – Dr. Michael seems to have thought of everything.  Even if we parents need treatment – one of the dentists is an adult specialised dentist so your children can be looked after in the children’s areas while you are having treatment.  This particular dentist is empathetic with adult patients who have dentist phobias so you can visit him here even if you have no children yourself.

During our chat I brought up the topic of the cost of treatment as generally in Dubai I personally have felt that the cost of dental treatment is high.  Dr. Michael has invested in what he believes to be the best equipped, best qualified and experienced dentists in practice in the Middle East and charges a fair price for the highest standards.  Their price list is always all inclusive and so there are never any hidden or add on charges that come as a surprise at the end of the treatment.

Dr. Michael’s philosophy is not just repair what needs repairing but oral health for life and I came away looking forward to my next visit as a patient at Dr. Michael’s.
