Dr. Michael's

Why did you choose to be an Orthodontist?
I come from a family of orthodontists and dentists. My father was one of the first orthodontists to practice back in my home country, Greece. I was raised next to dental chairs, listening to him talking to the patients, explaining the treatment and sharing the joy with his patients at the end of each appointment.

My love for orthodontics became even stronger in the U.K. in my early days of dentistry. It was then that I realized how passionate I am about developing healthier, brighter smiles. Orthodontics is a specialty that gives you great satisfaction during the treatment since you as a clinician along with the patient notice on every appointment the transformation of their smile.

What do you think is the biggest change that you’ve seen in your profession?
Orthodontics is a specialty that is evolving constantly, with new materials and techniques coming into the market making the orthodontist’s and patient’s life much easier. Nowadays, we can correct many malocclusions without using the conventional braces but with the use of clear aligners as well as braces that are hidden behind the teeth (lingual braces).

What are the top 3 most common orthodontic solutions in your practice?
Most of my adult patients request invisible solutions like clear aligners or lingual brackets. For our younger patients, removable and fixed conventional braces are recommended.
What is the most preferred way of correcting bites and straightening teeth?
The choice of a treatment plan depends on the individual problem and concern that the patient has. Conventional braces will do the trick in 99% of the time. As materials continuously evolve clear aligners and lingual braces can often resolve some of the malocclusions, and they enable us to have the same results with a happier, more confident patient throughout the duration of the treatment.

What’s the common misconception about orthodontics?
I believe that most of the people think that braces are suitable only for children or adolescents. Most adults don’t even know that a lot of their problems regarding their smile can be corrected with orthodontics. We see an increasing number of adults initiating treatments as soon as they realize how hassle-free and convenient orthodontics have become in our days.

When it comes to addressing children’s oral health, what’s the most important thing you like to focus on?
Toothbrushing is by far the number one. I always explain to my patients the importance of excellent oral hygiene and regular check-ups with the dentist. On top of that, a balanced diet is a must.

For orthodontics to be effective, what do you usually advice your patients?
The most important advice is to conduct regular check-ups, which will enable us to detect any problems early on. Once they enter a treatment, they shouldn’t miss their appointments, have excellent oral hygiene and follow the instruction on how to look after their braces.

Where do you see orthodontics in 10 years?
I believe in 10 years time we will be able to do wonders regarding the correction of the bite and position of the teeth in a very short time. New materials will help us speed up the orthodontic treatment with invisible means.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of your career?
I am quite an active person. I particularly enjoy running and volleyball. I‘ve also developed a passion for travelling and aim to visit at least two different destinations per year.
