A container ship collided with the harbour wall and then hit a crane at the Jebel Ali Port last week, causing the crane to fall. While there were no fatalities, 10 people were injured in the incident.

There was also a second crane that shifted off its rails, but fortunately didn’t fall. Terminal safety teams reportedly responded immediately once the incident took place and within five minutes, the head office safety team were on site as well.

The area was evacuated with the help of other emergency response teams and they created an exclusion zone. There were also safety drones surveying the area to ensure nobody else needed medical assistance.

Nine of the injured were treated at the DP World Medical Clinic located at the terminal. The remaining person had a fractured arm and leg, so he needed to be treated at the hospital and is now stable.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause behind what happened. Once completed, the collapsed crane will be removed. The second crane is currently not being used as it undergoes an assessment to ensure it’s safe to function.
