Why Huge Dubai Font Letters are Appearing Across the City

Following the launch of the Dubai Font last month, huge letters have been appearing in the font type that marked Dubai as the first city to have its very own typeface

Naturally, residents and visitors have been sharing pictures of these letters online (above image by @nadinealkoudsi), which so far appear to be English and Arabic letters. And of course, placing these giant letters in various parts of the Emirate has helped residents capture some impressive images.

The installation of these letters across the Emirate comes as part of an initiative to encourage reading, writing and self-expression, and encompasses the font's unique design and its blending of 23 different languages.

Titled "Express You", the campaign encourages residents to join in and share their involvement by using the hashtag #ExpressYou.

Found in popular locations so far, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, The Dubai Mall and Kite Beach, we're exciteed to see where else these giant letters will pop up.

Why does Dubai have its own font?

According to the official Dubai Font website, it was a project commissioned by HH Sheikh Hamdan, and was launched by The Executive Council of Dubai in partnership with Microsoft. The font reflects modernity, and is inspired by the city with the aim of creating harmony between Latin and Arabic in a font family of 4 weights.

"This typeface is designed to ignore barriers and empowers everyone by offering high quality design that is optimised for reading on screen and free for use in design, office communication, and even embedding in applications", the website shares.

There's on denying it's an impressive achievement to add to Dubai's already long list, as the font will reach over 85 million people in 180 countries worldwide.
