Stricter Traffic Rules and Increased Fines Coming to UAE

We recently reported there will be a new law making it mandatory for all car passengers to wear a seat belt, with a fine of Dh400 per passenger and four black points. That was only one of several new laws coming into effect on July 1st.

The amended Federal Traffic laws set much higher fines for certain offences.

Speeding

Speeding is a major issue in Dubai. According to statistics by the Dubai Police, there were just over 2.4 million traffic violations issued for exceeding the radar speed in 2016.

Exceeding the limit by not more than 20km/h, 30km/h and 40km/h will get fines of Dh300, Dh600 and Dh700 respectively. The new rules will raise the fines mostly for excessive speeding.

Drivers exceeding the speed limit by not more than 50km/h will get a Dh1,000 fine. Those exceeding the limit by not more than 60km/h will get a Dh1,500 along with six black points and have their car impounded for 15 days.

The consequences get worse as the speed increases. If a driver speeds more than 60km/h over the limit, they will get a Dh2,000 along with 12 black points and have their car confiscated for a whole month.

Speeding at 80km/h or more over the speed limit will land you with a whopping Dh3,000 fine as well as 23 black points and losing your car for two months.

Rumours

Rumours have been circulating online about new laws that make eating or drinking illegal while driving. While it is discouraged, the Dubai Police has clarified that these rumours are false and it is not a prohibited act under the law.
