Tips on Measuring Curtains for Your Home

Whether you are buying of the peg or having them made for you it’s always a little daunting when you first get your tape measure out.

First things first, what look are you going for, floor length formal drapes, or more informal tab tops or just more functional curtains. It’s best to have some idea as this will make measuring easier.

Below are some helpful hints to make the whole process easier.

Tip #1

Decide where the curtain rod will go. You'll probably want it about 6 inches above the window frame, but you might want it higher or lower or - for a dramatic look on a tall, deep window - inside the frame.

Tip #2

Always measure in at least 3 positions across the track or pole as floors and sills are rarely level. To avoid curtains dragging across the floor or sill we recommend you use the shortest of these 3 measurements.

Tip #3

Decide how much coverage you want. Curtains usually extend about 6 inches above the window frame, 2 to 3 inches on each side, and 2 to 3 inches on the bottom. Consider how much light you want to block - probably a lot if the window faces east and you like to sleep in - and how much privacy you want the curtains to provide.

Tip #4

Use a tape measure to measure from the curtain rod to the desired bottom point and from side to side. Multiply the side-to-side measurement by 2 to allow for generously full curtains.

Remember: Make sure the salesperson or decorator understands that these are desired finished dimensions of your curtains, not the dimensions of your window. (It is of course helpful to provide window dimensions as well.)
