CASA
I’m a big fan of casual neighbourhood restaurants. They generally have their own unique character, provide friendly personal service and are reasonably priced. CASA, recently opened in Jumeirah 1, is a perfect example.

Tucked away behind Jumeirah Plaza on Beach Road, it’s easy to find – once you know that it’s there – and complimentary valet parking ensures a stress free start to the evening. A converted villa,
CASA offers a huge courtyard garden, terraces and balconies, creating a much more spacious restaurant than you would at first imagine. Once inside, the high walls, multiple levels and subtle lighting create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Most of the seating is outside, which was a bit of a concern in mid-January, but the outdoor heaters did a good job, and I was told that during the summer months the garden will be fully tented and air-conditioned.
The word “casa” means “home” and Ashraf Mahmoud, one of the owners, says that that the concept for
CASA was to bring the many different nationalities of Dubai together in a place where they could all feel at home.

With that in mind the menu is wide-ranging, the staff is multi-ethnic and the instrumental background music easy for all ears. Looking around I could see teenagers eating pizzas and sandwiches, adults eating traditional three course dinners, as well as people just drinking, playing cards or smoking shisha – a real cross section of Dubai society. By 10pm on a Friday night the place was buzzing and a line was forming at the door.
We were a party of five and so were able to sample a wide range of the extensive menu. Several of us started with one of the many colourful fresh juices and mocktails (the restaurant is not licensed for alcohol) and we then dined our way through

soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, risottos, fish and seafood dishes (chicken and steaks are also available). Everyone agreed the dishes were well presented, portions were generous but not oversized and most importantly everything was carefully prepared and delicious. Special praise went to the Risotto Primavera, a creamy mixture of Italian rice, mixed fresh vegetables and parmesan cheese. Although it arrived a little late, no doubt due to the slow cooking required, it was well worth the wait and was passed around the table with a “You
must taste this!”
For dessert I took the Cream Brulé which I found a bit sloppy and overly sweet, however the Blueberry Cheesecake I sampled was excellent. Next time I may try one of the ice creams – Perils of Pralines sounds good. A wide range of teas and coffees and a shisha finished off the meal.
By the end of the evening, relaxed, comfortable and enjoying the atmosphere, we were all reluctant to leave. This is a restaurant where you want to linger. CASA had indeed made us feel at home and I know we’ll be back soon.
