What is an App?

If you keep hearing the word "app" and don't really know what it is- don't worry you are not alone! If you get an iPhone, Blackberry, a multimedia phone or an iPad you will soon get to grips with what one is. The word is short for application and in a nutshell it means something that you download to your device that does something in other words a program for your device- it can possibly be a game to play, something that does something on you mobile device like a weather program, an online magazine, a photo effects pice of software etc. It's basically software that you download onto your mobile device.

what is an appYou can have web apps or an online app too- and this would be something you access through your web browser. Apps can also be a smaller version of a website- so if you are using an iPad which is classed as a mobile device you might not want to visit the full website of a newspaper for example- so you can have an app on your device which will take you to the online version of the print copy of the newspaper.

If you download an app from somewhere like iTunes, or a company's website it will appear as an icon (a little square) on your device and you access it by clicking on it. Some apps will be free and some you have to pay for but most are very cheap- starting from as little as 6 AED. You can check reviews of apps online before buying them to make sure you will find them useful before you cram your device with too many apps!

We hope that's helped explain what an "app" is as it can be quite confusing!

1. Dinner Spinner- helps you out with recipes- you can even type in what ingredients you have and it will tell you what you can make with them- saves that brain searching what to have for dinner moment!

3. Instagram- this handy little app applies lovely filters to your photos making them look old fashioned and all sorts of funky effects
4. One Touch Flashlight- love this one- turns your phone into a torch using your camera flash- so no more creeping around in the dark and makes reading menus in dim light much easier!
5. What's App- this is a chat function a bit like BBM- but you can use it to chat to friends who are on a different kind of phone to you e.g. if you're friend doesn't have BBM cos she has an iPhone- now you can chat for free!
6. The Weather Channel- great app for keeping track of the weather where you are and anywhere else in the world.
7. Amazon- great for if you are on the move and have forgot to order those presents!
8. Epicurious- tons and tons of recipes and advice for you... also has the type in the ingredients function to help you decide what you can cook.
