An Amazing Nation: A Graphic Portrait of the UAE
An Amazing Nation is an illustrated story of the UAE's 45 years and it's a great way to learn more about this country in a fun way.
I recently picked up a copy of An Amazing Nation, edited by Gulf News Editor at Large Francis Matthew and written by Iona Stanely. As an expat, I believe it’s important to try to understand and embrace the culture of my host country.
While there is a lot of information out there, I really wanted something in-depth that would capture my attention throughout. So when I saw this illustrated story of the UAE, I was intrigued.
Once I started reading through it, I couldn’t stop. The book is not only full of insightful information, but also some amazing photos, visual illustrations and multi-dimensional renderings. The book covers everything you can possibly think of, you will probably have no questions left to ask about the UAE after completing it.
The book is divided into seven important chapters – politics, economy, religion, architecture, heritage, life and future. Under each of these broad chapters, there is a wealth of information covering every detail, from explaining the pictures on the dirham notes to how to wear the national dress.
What I found so unique was the way all the information was relayed. It wasn’t just blocks of text with a picture here and there, it felt truly interactive.

One of my favourite parts was the large four-page spread of Burj Khalifa. I thought it was a brilliant way of portraying the tallest building in the world and showing its significance. It was also accompanied by so many little interesting details about the building and what’s inside it.
I truly appreciated that the book dedicated a section to Islam. Understanding the faith practiced by the local community and many others plays an important part in respecting the norms in the country.
I have to mention that the pages about the local cuisine have such vivid photographs that it made me hungry and craving some! In the same heritage section, I fell in love with the watercolour painting of a pearl diver.

As an animal-lover, I was so excited to see that there was so much information about the animals that can be found in the country and what a significant role they play in the local culture.
The book ended on a refreshing note, looking to the future and all the phenomenal things that we should look forward to in years to come.
I feel truly educated about the UAE after reading An Amazing Nation. I would definitely recommend it to new expats, but also anyone who would be interested in knowing more about this beautiful country.
