The UAE has a dress code based on respect for the culture and religion of the land. And this is expected to be upkept particularly during the Holy Month of Ramadan, when everyone is a lot more respectful towards those around them and the laws of the land. It's not a hard dress code to follow - keeping your shoulders and knees covered - but we understand that sometimes, especially during the extreme heat of the desert's summers that it can be uncomfortable.

Ramadan Style in UAE

Never fear, we've collected some staple items that you should have in your wardrobe during the Holy Month that will not only keep you cool, comfortable and sweat-patch free, but also in keeping with the laws here in the UAE. And when is there a better time than to wear these items than during Suhour and Iftar, a time when you can sit with your friends and family and prepare for fast or break it at sundown.

The Kaftan

Kaftan

Did you know that the kaftan originates in the Middle East? It can be worn as a full length or hip length dress. Some open at the front in a robe style, while others can be tied or buttoned from the waist to the neck. They're a nice, easy and flow-y (drafty, yay!) item of clothing to wear and especially great in the hot months here in the UAE.

Nowadays, the kaftan offers women comfort, modesty and glamour... All the while keeping you covered up! Not only because of the dress code here, but it protects you and your skin from the suns beaming rays.

Wear with: a skinny belt to give your outfit shape, flat pumps or sandals and a statement necklace and sunnies!

The Maxi Skirt

Maxi Skirt

For a forever chic look, go all out for the leg lengthening virtues of the maxi skirt. This staple piece is very comfortable when it comes to the desert heat and can be accessorised and worn in so many different ways - ensuring you have variety in your outfits! The maxi skirt strikes a balance between casual and glamourous, so it's no wonder that it continues to be a major trend.

The maxi skirt works all year-round, but works best during hotter months like here! Lightweight fabrics and pretty prints go hand-in-hand, bringing with it super-feminine style. But remember, keep your skirt shapeless and refrain from wearing a piece that is too figure-hugging.

Wear with: a crisp shirt or slouchy jumper to gain optimum Ramadan style.

The Shirt

Dress shirts

A dress shirt is one of the most important essentials in every woman's wardrobe, and suits all clothing personalities - trendy to sporty, urban to eclectic. Most people associate it with the corporate dress code world, but if they were to open their minds a little, they'll discover that a dress shirt can be styled in so many different ways, whether it be dressing up or dressing down! Keep yourself from looking manly and pair your shirt with a maxi skirt (see above), statement necklaces and wear them in so many different colours! Don't stick to just the classic white. Keep an eye out for cute, feminine details like ruffles, puffed sleeves, bib pleats and belted waist to give your shirt that little bit of personality.

Wear with: tapered, ankle-length trousers, a maxi skirt, pumps or heels!

The Jersey Gown

And now for your evening wear! While they may be a little too extravagent to wear to work or sit in the house all day, but when it comes to attending Iftar on an evening, dress to (respectfully) impress with a jersey gown. Ensure it's not too figure-hugging, and allows for breathing space in the heat.

You should choose the right neckline and sleevs that suit your look, too. And remember to wear the correct under garments - nobody wants to see the outline of your underwear, especially during the Holy Month.

The Accessories

Shoes

Add some personality to your outfit with some accessories! We suggest a comfortable pair of patent shoes or flat pumps that won't hurt your feet during the day and night! Espadrilles are great when teamed with ankle-length trousers, flat pumps go great with jeans and of course - treat yourself to a pair of embellished heels to go with your jersey gown or kaftan!

Plus, don't forget to pick up a new, light and airy scarf that will add depth to your outfit, as well as being a handy cover-up when needed around the town!
