Just to confirm...went yesterday and they are NOT closing. Only the nightclub nearby. In fact they are moving very soon right next door to an even bigger store as trade is so good!!!

The nightclub at Barracuda is closing. The off-licence is definitely NOT closing. I phoned them yesterday to check - the new rule does not affect them at all. If you would like to phone them yourself, just to put your mind at rest, the number is 06 768 1124.
I have not been to Centaurus Intl in RAK, but have had a delivery from them.
I would definitely recommend a trip to The Cellar in RAK - it is tax free and you don't need to show a licence (although it's always a good idea to carry your licence with you, wherever you go, just in case). It is operated by MMI and they have a great range of stock, nothing is out of date, and it is lovely and spacious and clean. The prices are pretty much the same as at Barracuda. To get there, you just head straight up the Emirates Road until you reach the end, then turn left, and The Cellar is approx 7km down that road on your right hand side. So easy to find.

Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain an alcohol licence if we have Sharjah residence visa? We live in Dubai and my husbands place of work is in Dubai, but his company head office is in Sharjah so I guess thats why we have Sharjah visa. We go to Baracuda at the moment, but if they close there will be no more sitting in the garden with a glass of wine in the evening :-(
Hi yep you can get a booze licence if you are a sharjah resident. You need a no objection letter from your company sponsor and then a letter from Sharjah police saying that you are allowed to have a licence. Fill out the form from A&E, put the letters in, pay your fee, wait a couple of weeks and you will still be drinking wine in the evening. edited by shellyg63 on 22/04/2009

According to the 3rd paragraph in this news article, Baracuda have NOT been asked to close. Praise the lord, here's hoping it true!

mbreskova, a friend of mine is in the exact same situation as you.Living in Dubai but with a Sharjah residency visa, and company HQ located in Sharjah although his office is in Dubai. They do have an alcoholic licence for Dubai, so it can be done. Do a search, I know his wife has posted on here about this before. HTH.

The new ruler might have decided to follow Sharjah's rules. There is still a Hole in the wall in Ajman.

The article does not say a total alcohol ban in UAQ so perhaps the retail outlet will survive, it must have the highest dirham turnover of any business in the emirate and it is owned by the Sheikh...

There's still the MMI Wine Cellar in RAK though, so that might be a way around it, otherwise we're all going to have to suck itup and pay local prices for booze.
I can't imagine we'd get a Barracuda type place here in Dubai as the laws are different - a licence is required and 30% tax, hence MMI and A&E.
