VAT Claim

Latest post at 04/05/2011 07:30:19
I bought an online training course where I have been charged 20% VAT on it. I know that if I purchase goods in Europe that I can claim back the VAT but how does it work with online training? Does anyone know what the procedure is. Thanks so much ladies.

if you buy things online you cannot claim the vat back, you have to actually buy it in a shop in the uk which is part of the scheme, (voluntary) so not all do, and some make you spend a minimum amount, and then you can take the form back to the airport etc.

Sorry -- just an observation! -- but that's a different scheme to Oz, where if your goods are being sent to an overseas address, a lot of purchasing programs/systems will 'drop' the GST [aka VAT] from your purchase before you pay.

Pity.

I know that, that's why I'm questioning it. If I buy stuff of other online providers it get's deducted but this one wouldn't so I was hoping that there is a way to get it back.

if they havent done it then they are not in the scheme, its voluntary. for eg amazon will drop the vat if you are overseas and get them sent here. marks and sparks if you buy in their shops in uk (never got them to send stuff here) they have a minimum spend of 75 gbp, and then they take like half again as an admin fee.

the shop has to fill out the form for you calucating the vat rebate, as i said its voluntary, if they wont do that they are not part of the scheme and there is no way of claiming it back especially off an online shop.

If the training course is being provided from the EU country, then VAT is applicable

The VAT can be reclaimed if the invoice is addressed to a Company that is registered in the UAE, since only companies are allowed to claim on services, such as training courses. Also, it depends on the country as well. From the VAT rate of 20% I presume it is from the UK, in which case you can apply for a refund provided the above criteria is met.

As busybee said they won't usually do it if it is online as they have to send you a form stamped and when you exit the country you have to produce the goods and the receipt for inspection to get the refund.

I was so annoyed with Tiffany and Co as I was stung 77 pounds VAT because I bought goods online, they said that if I'd bought it in a shop they would give me the form but for online purchases they don't!! I had it sent to my UK address and was collecting it and still exiting via the airport etc. but, alas no they refused to send me the form!

yeh you have to go into the shop. how do they know that if you get it sent to a uk address that you will be leaving the country, they dont, but then again if you dont leave the country you cannot apply at customs anyways.

But even if you buy it in the shop, they don't know that you are definitely leaving...you only get the refund at the airport I believe? Anyway, lesson learned!

thats what i mean you have to show your passport that you are non resident and the only way to actually process the form is to pass through the airport.
