How common is a notice period/exit clause in a tenancy/rental contract these days?

When I lived in Dubai a few years ago I found it very stressful not having any kind of exit clause / notice period in my rental contract, especially when providing cheques in advance. Now we are moving back to Dubai and I am wondering if this has changed post 'credit crunch'. If we pay rent in advance and my husband ends up hating his new job in Dubai, is there still no way of leaving without losing the entire year's rent? What about properties in the new areas like Motor City, Layan, Jumeirah Village... are notice periods standard in the rental contracts? Thanks.
