Another cause of thrush is sweets / too much sugar in diet. Little angel - can boys get e pinworms? Also how do you tell with flash light? Edited to add: I've just looked it up and feel sick. Anything like that creaps me out. edited by AussiePup on 07/12/2011

I would introduce some acidophilus powders or tablets to her diet. Have her eats lots of live culture yogurts and if it is a bit of thrush you can put a bit of the yogurt (plain, no sugar) right on her vagina. It's a great natural treatment for thrush. You could also use a wash with grapefruitseed oil. That's also a great treatment.

Thrush is very common in little girls as are bacterial infections often caused by wiping from back to front, or touching as children are inclined to do. Thrush (candida) is very easily treated with creams such as clotrimazole but get her checked by your doc to get a proper diagnosis. :)

really?! out the vagina? they may travel there but the discomfort/irritation must start in the anus...I have heard of no worms that come out of the vagina initially, and as the OP's post was about itching 'there' why would we immediately guess a problem with worms 'here'? Most worms come out to lay their eggs at night on the rim of the anus and you will know when that happens...your chuld will be in extreme discomfort even if partially asleep...not clutching her front bits and complaining of itch during the day.

YES! my dd had pinworms when she was 3. They come out at night when the child is sleeping and travel to the vagina. They cause irritation and itching! This is very common actually with young kids especially if they play on playgrounds in the sand and dirt!!!!! We had to do the flashlight trick at night and we saw them! YUCK! I felt horrible that she had them! She was put on medication and they were gone in no time flat! Worms! Most likely, take your child to the doctor not post on forum! Worms? In a childs vagina? Really? Last I heard worms were the provence of back bottoms.... Everyone else has given very sensible advice on this forum as to what the problem could be and also suggested seeing a doc to get it sorted out properly. The only reason for not posting on a forum would be to avoid advice like yours! *wanders off having REALLY heard it all now*

arohadxb... no offense but I beg to differ... the most common symptom of a child having worms (pinworms or threadworms) is itching in the private area... http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/commoninfections/a/pinworms.htm my 4yr old DD went through the same and a simple week course of deworming her solved the issue :) but, of course, with kids one can never be too sure and every case differs so it's always best to get a professional opinion from the child's pediatrician

Thanks ladies for all your suggestions. We're off to the dr, as clearly this could be more than just an irritation! We're careful about the no knickers time, no bubble bath, careful drying, no sitting in wet swimmers etc but she's suffering nonetheless. Thanks also Nascm7859 for the link - geez, I hope it's not that!

Just to add another thought - it's possible she is being too clean, might sound silly, but if she is using a lot of soap shower gel / bubble bath to make sure she is clean, and not rinsing it properly that could make her itchy. Even if she is rinsing well, she may be having a mild reaction to whatever soap / gel she is using. Also, being too clean 'down there' can be a problem in itself as the body needs a certain amount of good bacteria to stay healthy, if she is cleaning too thoroughly that may be causing a problem.

But I also second taking her to the Dr, yes it might scare her at first but to be honest kids that go to the doc when they are small won't be scared/embarrassed about going later on... esp when teenagers! I first had to be looked at 'there' when I was about 10 and it freaked me out no end.... especially b/c the doc was a male (no choice, he was a specialist!!) It got easier as I went along, just kinda wished I'd had to go when I was younger so it was more 'normal' if you get what I mean.

goes without saying, but if possible go without underpants when possible and cotton when needed. Synthetics don't help. (I guess most kid's underwear is cotton but you never know) Also, if she has been running around with a wet swimsuit on this can cause the symptoms as well, so make sure she takes it off asap after swimming

Hey Holly, my DD has had thrush twice and both times in the middle of the night when the itching was driving her insane. Dettol bath followed by yogurt applied directly to the area worked wonders. Now you're going to laugh but I didn't have any natural yogurt on hand and it was about midnight so I applied pineapple yogurt (bits out) and it did the trick! I just told her it was "cream" rather than giving her a lifelong yogurt phobia! Like you I was reluctant to take her to the doctor for this reason, particularly when she's not used to many doctor visits (general good health). But when she was there for some jabs I told him of my treatment and he agreed it was fine. She had chronic nappy rash when she was young and thrush is an extension of that, especially when the child is run down. So far be it for me to diagnose your DD over EW but it sure sounds similar. On the hygiene front both mine enjoy showers but twice a week they have a bath as it ensures a good soak "down there"! Good luck in the meantime.

Has she on antibiotics recently? Antibiotics disrupt the "natural chemistry" and sometimes cause a yeast infection. Nothing a little yogurt and sometimes a bit of medicine cant sort right out. Rule that out first of all. Also, little girls dont always get themselves as clean as one would hope. I think it is part of their learning curve (and ours). Completely normal to be a little itchy down there sometimes.... nice warm shower cleanse and perhaps a little diaper rash cream might help.

When she does "Number Twos" does she always wipe front to back - could be just a bacterial infection if she doesn't wipe too well - my DDs had this, so had to role model :) :) :) Doh! Actually I haven't checked that for a while. Not sure she'll let me in the loo these days, but I'll check that!

I've tried Sudocream and various other nappy rash creams. Perhaps I should take her to the dr then. I thought it just might be a common thing for kids. She's soooo private about her body right now I was hoping to spare her the indignity ........

Well children can get thrush, so it's worth going to your doctor. Easily dealt with.

I would say that because she is only 5 she should go to the doctor. There must be a medical reason why it's happening so she should probably be seen by a doc and given some appropriate medicine... Poor thing, how annoying for her (and you)!

My 5yo DD often complains that her vagina's itchy. She hangs on with one hand like she's busting to go to the toilet, but when I asks if she needs to go, she says, no, I'm just itchy. I've encouraged her to clean and dry properly. It's not really serious enough to drag her off to the dr, can anyone recommend a cream or something for when it strikes? Never suffered myself so I'm not sure, besides, she's only 5 so I"m not sure adult medication is necessarily appropriate. TIA
