I have seen a lot of eye doctors for various problems, one being retinal detachment. I have seen Dr. Gauba for several years now, very good. The retinal specialist who worked in his clinic was very good, and when my retinal detachment was spotted I was whisked straight in to see him to have treatment. I went for a 2nd opinion at Moorfields and didn't rate the guy there (Dr. Edmundo, I think?) Just not a very people person and did not explain things to me very well at all compared with what I had been told elsewhere. I then went for a 3rd opinion as they referred me to Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in AD, and the South African Dr. there was very good (he spends time between Moorfields and ICL I believe.) Dr. Grimm is also good but I have not been to see her in a while.
I was also disappointed with my experience at the Moorfields - but don't remember the specialist's name ( but not Dr Edmundo). I was very allergic to drops he prescribed me and I don't think he even asked if I was allergic to anything or ignored what I said to him (I recently found out that drug in those drops can cause death from allergy!). I had to stop the drops immediately - so that was a waste of time and money. The other thing that happened which may have been a one off - when i tried to phone to make an appointment - they picked up but no one said "hello" at reception and on re-dialling a few times - no one answered phone for about half an hour a between 9 a.m and 10 am.!
I heard the service at New Vision Eye Center is the best. My friends at office has been to them for various eye check-ups and procedures. This is the website I got of them http://newvisioneyecenter.com/
What about for children? I need to take DS. I recommend Dr Anwar Sajwani for kids. He's super calm and his staff are really good with calming my tykes down too. He works out of the Laser Clinic in the office bldg of Al Mazaya Ctr, keeps mainly afternoon and evening hours.

I took mine to a pediatric ophthalmologist at Moorfields. They seemed very professional and we decided to go along with their recommendations (we were there for a third opinion). The only thing is you'll probably have to wait for a few weeks to get an appointment...
i recommend Dr. Rao and her team at City... i did a whole series of eye surgeries there for my extremely high myopia (-17 and 18!!!... so almost blind)... they have excellent doctors and state of the art equipment & lasers to correct most eye related ailments from your retina to cornea...
i had my surgery four years ago and can still see crystal clear! :)

L - I recommend you go see Dr Anupama Rao at City Hospital. I went to see her for a full examination after seeing Dr Grimm for a routine check up expecting to just be told that I need new prescriptions for glasses, but was told vaguely that I was a glaucoma suspect. They appear to have a better range of equipment for all the tests at the City (Visual field, optic nerve thinkness scanning/measuring etc., sorry can't remember the full medical/scientific terms).

Went to the opticians today for a routine eye test. The guy freaked me out as he reckons I have something wrong with my retina. Sharp intake of breath followed by ..."You need a full exam at eye hospital mam". Does anyone have any recommendations for a good opthalmologist please? Thank you
