I loved doing cooking classes in people's homes. You get to learn the dishes they have learnt from their families. Thai with Juree in the meadows Thai with Abeda at the thai restaurant in the marina (Siamin) Indian with my friend Sejal in Jumeirah Islands (she's not there anymore so we just cook together now we are both back in England!) Indian with Abeda (spice and aroma) when she was in Arabian Ranches but she's now in Al Barsha Arabic with Gina in Jumeirah Lake Towers. All were relaxed, informative, interesting and you met some lovely people and ate some absolutely delicious food. the only one I didn't get around to doing was Lan who teaches Vietnamese. The guys at Table 9 are running superb cooking classes. A friend of mine did their break making class - and wow! you should see the pictures of the breads they are producing from home. Spice and Aroma also ran cultural cooking trips - I never did one but they sounded amazing and the ladies I met who did them said they were superb - not sure if Abeda still runs them but definitely worth checking. edited by Clairehdp on 07/11/2012 Hey there! Reviving a very old post and wondering is Clairehdp is still on the forum and reading. If so would you have details of Juree for Thai cooking? Also is Abeda mentioned for Thai cooking & Indian the same Abeda or two different abedas. Looking forward to some help!

@Claire Do you have the contact details for the private home lessons? I would love to try the thai class in the meadows and the vietnamese class. Sorry only just seen this! Here's Juree for thai - i will check out Lan not sure if she's still in dubai but will find her details for you http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=91504 I can't find Lan's details - when you speak to Juree ask her about Lan - she will know if she's still teaching. Good luck, enjoy and say hi to Juree from me! edited by Clairehdp on 29/11/2012 Lan 0506545125

Gina's email is [email protected] I did her classes about 1.5 years ago, they were great. She had small groups and we ate together and took home the leftover :) I am still doing some of the dishes at home based on her recipes.

In regards to ICCA... I originally went to the school wanting to enroll in the amateur course, then was convinced by the lady Shaanaz (didnt know she was the owner of the school @ time)that I would not be getting the full experience unless I took the full time proffesional program. That wasnt the case and I felt I wasted the 30k dirhams that I could have donated to a good cause:( There are aprox 50 students in the school at one given time and its just too chaotic and difficult with such an occupancy. We had to share burners most of the time and there were students fighting literally over pots and pans... As for the instructors, I agree that they all come from proffessional experience in big hotel chains in India with the exception of one instructor who is from Kenya, not sure where his experience is from though. They were all good. Not so great on the international cuisine as I have taken courses abroad and they didnt compare. Although the instructors were fit for the job, it didnt seem like they were too happy with their jobs. And It may have been there long daily commute to and from Ajman, which is were they lived along with the international students. As a matter of fact, one day the pastry chef asked me to help him find a job. And as far as the big hotels hiring from the school... Once the students finish the program they each paid 30,000 dirhams for, the school then acts as a recruiting agency and gets them commis1 / 2 positions at local hotels / restaurants that pay 1800-2000 dirhams a month!... Yes maximum 2,000 dirhams a month... I felt really bad for the students in my class, as they were all under 25 and they paid 30K dirhams each to take the course, thinking they were going to be placed in positions where they were going to earn decent salaries. And then found out they would be earning 2k a month at max. OH! and not to mention that you spend 1 - 1 1/2 hours every morning and every afternoon cleaning! Yes cleaning dishes, mopping floors, wiping table tops, scrubbing burners, cleaning refrigerators, and dishwashing... I wish someone had told me all this before taking the full time class at ICCA, and therefore, Im sharing my personal experience. I have taken many cooking classes in and around Dubai. You may also want to check out Atelier de Chefs- I really enjoy their classes, very professional. Also, check with Bustan Rotana,(near airport) they have 1 class a month and they rotate the venues between, Benihana, Blue Elephant, Steak House, etc. Also for Vietnamese, there used to be a lady named Lan who taught Vietnamese cuisine from home, she was great. OP this is my opinion and first hand experience. Good Luck and Bon Apetite in finding the right class:)

Thanks a lot DB!! Have you heard about scafa school in jlt too? I did a search recently on the forum, but with no luck. The school is new, so maybe it doesn't have a lot of review yet. The course you took seems amazing. I also would like to go professional with my hobby, but the red tape here scares me too, and also, I have to admit, I haven't totally figured out what I want to do (but def. food/cooking related). Thanks again, have a lovely day

Hi the dangerous blonde:) hope you are doing good! If u don't mind me asking, why did you take the course in iccadubai? For personal interest, or for professional matter? I am asking because I too was interested in iccadubai, but can't really understand if they are meant for professional or amateur (if that makes sense?) Which course did you follow? Thanks a lot for sharing, I am really interested too in cooking classes (but long term, not only one hour or two). Thanks again:)

I attended one of the Indian spice and aroma courses and it was informative, good fun and the food was delicious! Unfortunately the venue at her house is in Al Barsha 2 is hard to find and even harder to get out! AED150 per lesson.
