We always stay at the Al Ain Hilton. A bit of an older hotel but has a wing that is all renovated. The pool is great fun for kids and the place has a nice atmosphere. Be sure to specify if you want a non-smoking room though.

I've never been to Al Ain and would love to visit the zoo. Are there any nice hotels near the zoo so we can make a night or weekend of it?

The zoo also has some great activities and day camp style things for kids over the winter vacation if you are not going way. They are fun for the kids and also helps increase awareness of the environment, social responsibility, general knowledge, etc.

Yes, we were there only yesterday afternoon with our DD. the hippos are lovely, 4 of them. They are quite active in and out of the water. You can see them quite close up as their pool is close to the fence. They are well worth the trip. Although, I think the Meerkats are the best!!!! It will be an hour and a half drive from Dubai I would think (if you keep the speed limit) i go to al ain every month for a weekend, love it, i don't mind the journey at all, it's part of the fun! thanks for hippo update :)

i went to al ain zoo last year, i loved it!! TIP: go early in the morning, well i think it opens at 10am, to miss the crowds and school trips, also the animals tend to hide more in the afternoons.

get on Al Khail road and drive straight till exit to Al Ain (Al Ain road), then it will be just a straight road. It will take you about 20-30 min till exit and then about 1.5 hour till you reach the zoo. Just one tip - upon arriving to Al Ain, follow the highway with the signs to Al Ain airport/Tawaam hospital (you will see the brown zoo signs along the way). After you take exit from highway and get into roundabouts, just drive straight passing number of roundabouts until the end (the roundabout with animal sculptures on it is at the entrance of zoo) Have fun
