My son is ill with depression and has not been to school for 5 months due to his anxiety and phobia.
He is now agoraphobic and won't leave home. I have a great doctor & therapist but he is housebound so progress is very slow.
I guess the reason for this post is to see if there are any other people living in Dubai going through something similar because it is a very lonely journey. Also with the stigma attached to mental illness it's not something you always want to mention.
We have only tried a couple medications unsuccessfully and worry that there is no psychiatric inpatient facility for kids invade things get worse

I cannot offer advice, however I saw this thread and felt for you. I have a brother who suffered with this. I know how it can weigh a family down as your child is born into this world and there are hopes and aspirations for this child and this hits and it catches the leg of the entire family and each day one thinks it is getting better, the next proves that wrong. In Tibet, in Africa, children do not hav access to schools. These children work with their parents taking are of the village. They awake early, are expected to carry heavy loads of water or produce and, effectively, work. These kids did it. I saw these young children working harder than a lot of first world people. While observing, i realized that we have closed so many windows of opportunity for children. School is brilliant - however, what for those people who were not born brilliant at school? They are told they have issues. It is like these little people have been born in the wrong time. Where the only value is a certificate to show you followed the leader, conferred, and listened for 12 years, without which, you were not, are not, a successful person in life. And this is wrong. The world is telling your son that he not attending school equals him being a failure. That enters his thoughts, frther worsening his self-perception. He does not want to face a world that he is not good enough for. I really want to say with all of this, that you ARE NOT ALONE. Those who do not acknowledge his illness have never seen it in their eyes and felt it. Leave these people alone. Do not recognize their opinion as by validating it in anyway, their opinion breathes. And as society has become what it is, an education based society, it is clearer today that there are internal illnesses as this whereas in past societies we too were like the Africans and did not go to school if we were not a school going body. I hope you and your son have a star day today. And then try for another one tomorrow. Each day is a new day. If you cannot change forever, change for now. Don't feel lonely. There will be others you can talk to - speak to your dr and ask for info ration. <em>edited by Londiamond on 17/09/2014</em>

You may be very happy with your medical team but if you need a second opinion there is a new clinic opening in DHCC specialising in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, something that is much needed. They have a wealth of expertise on their team. Many of the staff are UK trained and experienced. The team includes psychiatrist, psychologist, counsellors, mental health nurse, speech-language therapist etc. it might be worth a try. I don't have the number but it's called the Camali Clinic. I'm sure if you google it you'll find it.

Anne, I hope your son is on the road to recovery soon. Ive no experience of what you've mentioned in the 'normal sense' as my sons severe mood disorder is part and parcel of something else but I do have experience of psychiatric medications and youngsters. Youve said there's no improvement after 5 months and two medications. Only you will know why there has been two meds in 5 months but I just wanted to suggest that these medications can take quite a while to start working let alone work effectively. Could you maybe have another bash at one for a longer period of time than the others and see if it helps. Even side effects can take a while to settle as unpleasant as they can be at times. Eta - if you wanted to chat about medications I can raise you Lithium, Haliperidol, Abilify, Effexor, Procycledine - all washed down twice a day without a nice glass of Chianti. ;) edited by DesertRose1958 on 18/01/2014

Hi Ann, I understand you are not looking for any solution for your son, but have you considered to meet a hypnotherapist for your son? S

Dear Ann I just wanted to say how brave you have been to come on to the forum and i really hope that someone out there maybe can point you in the right direction or may have experienced something similar. Thanks to DR 1958 this forum is familiar with mental health issues, so please don't feel there is stigma here. I can not imagine how hard this is for you and your family to deal with. You also must also find support as trying to cope with this as the primary care giver must be incredibly tiresome, frustrating and worrisome. I'm quite interested in your post and if it's not too personal can i ask what sort of age range you are dealing with and was there a specific that set this off (depression) or is your son bipolar? Please don't feel you have to share/answer and please don't put too much down that is personal to you on a public forum. Have you looked into support forums online that are more specific to your sons illness, sometimes these can be very helpful and you can share your daily traumas with others in the same boat and gain some real support from them and advice. Funnily i was only reading this one last night about another mental health issue in children. http://www.thelittleprince.org/Index.html In Dubai there is senses, which is not really the right place for your son by the sound of it but it may be able to advice further as to therapists or anything else,. http://www.sensescentre.com/who-we-help.html Depending on severity you may have to look at relocating back to your home country for more specialized help. Good luck and thank you for posting.

HiAnn I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I know from experience just how heartbreaking it is to watch your child suffer with something like this (in our case anxiety) and feel like there is nothing you can do to help. We have thankfully come through the other side though it is still somewhat of an uphill struggle at times. I'm happy to discuss further if you'd like, please post your email address and I'll be in touch.
