Hi Ladies, any mums out there have any advice to help cure a 2 year old's bronchitis? He's had it for 3 weeks and still hasn't managed to shift it. He's now on day 3 of antibiotics after trying everything from a humidifier in room, vix on feet/chest, honey at night, ventolin inhaler...he's still having 1/2 hour coughing fits a couple of times a night which are so bad that he's vomiting alot - any other route to go, don't know what else we can do? TIA

Sorry to jump on this thread ut was hoping for some advice. My 3 year old daughter has had a 'phlegmy' chest on and off for about 4 months now and I want to take her to a specialist so what kind of specialist should I be taking her to and can you recommend anyone?. Most of the time there is no temperature but now and then she does seem to have a slight temperature of no more that 38 degrees. About two weeks ago she had a higher temperature and the dr said it was a sinus infection and gave anti biotics. Before that he thought it was wheezing and gave the inhaler combination mentioned in this thread but we can't seem to clear her chest. TIA Hi Natashab, I haven't been to see him but Dr Loubser at Infinity clinic has come highly recommended for respiratory issues with children. He specialises in asthma and allergies so maybe take your daughter to see him? Hope she gets better soon

You are most welcome. I was so stressed about the whole thing and she was so miserable the poor thing. Hopefully you will be able to shake it once and for all! X

Hi Gingercat - thanks for all the info and I'm so glad your little one is happily running around again! So there is light at the end of the tunnel. We went to have a check up and the doc prescribed exactly what you suggested - the ventolin and Flixotide through inhaler without me mentioning them! We've seen an improvement so hopefully we'll be in the clear after 7 days on them. Also, noted on what to do if there are any reoccurrences in the future - good to know that we should be prepared for that - thanks again XX

We had the exact same thing from November to feb with our lo. Had done weeks of nebulising, saw lots of different doctors all prescribing ventolin and pulmacort via nebuliser. The vomit, cough saga was awful. My lo looked awful and I was at my wits end. Went to dr talal farha in farha clinic in healthcare city as a last resort. He prescribed ventolin and flixotide to be given in inhaler. Two days later, her recovery was unbelievable. The cough finally went! When it crept back in a couple of weeks later, a couple of puffs for rep days completely cleared it. I am so happy. She was in terrible form all the time with this horrible cough. Clingy and angry with frequent temper tantrums. I thought it was the terrible twos. I had no idea she was feeling so bad with it. I really wanted to find an alternative route. I tried honey and cinnamon, baby vicks, sleeping upright. Only these meds worked. Please ask your doctor got a prescription for these and ask him to show you how to use the inhaler correctly. It's so much quicker and more effective than the nebuliser. I'm just delighted to have my lovely, playful toddler back! X edited by gingercat on 25/04/2014

Hi, Sabrina, it would be helpful to have a nebuliser at home then. Then you won't need to go to the clinic every time your kid starts coughing again, just to stock nebules at home. My LO had these cough attacks for a few nights in a row, I made her breathe Ventolin and Pulmicort, helps very good in a couple of days. It's not easy to keep it in control. By the way when we were in Austria last summer asthma was completely gone for two months. If you travel to a different climate in summer you might get a break :))

Thanks ladies, we see Dr Keith Nicholl who has advised we finish the course of antibiotics, if there's no improvement I think I have to go and see a specialist. LO had coughing fits last night but no vomit so I can only take that as a good sign. Here's hoping... sometimes you feel like you're the only one going through it so it really helps that there are others out there battling with it - thanks again! Stick with your DR, he is a good one! You don't need a specialist unless your Dr (who is great) tells you so. All will be fine, these things can take time to clear up and are horrible to witness. Hi LC, so it seems that the poor thing does have asthma (he has been on corticosteroids to treat asthma and it worked with immediate effect). Obviously he is still too young to comprehensively diagnose but I think both myself, hubby and the doc know it - Now to control and manage it is going to be the challenge!

See a good British GP. There are a few around, he may need a change of antibiotics or a bit longer for them to kick in.

My daughter is in the same age and we were fighting the same horrible night cough from August until December. If your LO doesn't have fever all this time it is most likely allergic, even if initial cause was viral. I suggest you see a pediatrician specializing on asthma and allergies. The cough might be coming from the nose (allergic rhinitis), when mucus is coming down into the throat and lungs causing this cough. My LO was treated with Nasonex, Seretide and then Singulair for 3 months, when winter came the cough was gone. I still don't know whether it happened because we had our ACs cleaned or the medication helped or air in winter was better. This cough is hard to get rid of, I hope your doctor will establish the cause for it. ^^^^ this Our daughter was also diagnosed with bronchiolitic cold induced asthma by Dr. syed Ahmed at kids first clinic. So yes, the trigger was in fact a cold or viral infection, but this was an allergic reaction, and had to be treated as such.

For these kids who get chesty, some of the older Eastern traditions seem to work, I was sceptical at first but have seen first hand! First of all, it's too cold at the moment for them to swim. Secondly, keep their chests warm all the time, in the winter this means vests. no cold water/drinks. When they are actually suffering from coughing fits, have them sleep as upright as possible, this meant for us that I would sleep sitting up with LO sleeping on my chest (this keeps them warm and also keeps them upright). Broths made from bones really help, lots of meat/bone stews. Get well soon x

Thanks Alemania, he actually hasn't had a temperature at all during all of this and his appetite has been great which is strange as that's the first thing that he looses when he is ill...my worst fear is asthma as DH had really bad child asthma. I asked his doc about the chances and he said that they can't clinically test for this until 5/6 and any tests would be inconclusive. Can you please let me know which specialist you went to see? Thanks again ladies

how did he confirm bronchitis? did he do a swab test of the inner throat? Typically they should order a chest X-ray to rule out a condition like pneumonia, and may sometimes order a breathing test (called spirometry) to rule out asthma... if your doc hasn't done these I would insist on it before medicating the child any further... with antibiotics most children start to show improvements in symptoms within 48hrs... but if the fever and cough is persisting it may be signs of something more severe... Ok, that's of great help. He did a swab test, but no chest x ray. I'll book him in tomorrow to do so, thanks again

has the doctor confirmed bronchitis and ruled out pneumonia? just asking coz my 2yr went through a similar episode two months back and after two different courses of antibiotics and no improvement - finally blood tests and chest xray was done which clearly showed pneumonia... then poor little bubba was admitted for a week in hospital on heavy meds until she got better... she was exhibiting all the very same symptoms and even we tried out all the very same home remedies at first hope he gets better soon Thanks Horizonmum, gosh that sounds awful... the doc has confirmed it's bronchitis, but then neither him or I mentioned pneumonia. Maybe I wait and see if this course of antibiotics works before we do the x rays and blood tests...I've even lifted the bed at head end and it's made no difference at all :-(
