Hello all,

My husband has been offered job in Doha. Im staying in UK as Im a teacher and have committed to my post for this year. My question is we were planning to start a family this year and assuming everything goes to plan (Im setting myself up here) then I would be joining my husband in the summer in Qatar. My question is, is his health insurance likely to cover giving birth if I am already pregnant before I have my medical or is it more likely we will have to pay for it? If this is the case I will wait and give birth in the UK before I join him in Qatar just incase god forbid anything happened and the hospital bill costs skyrocket.

Don't be afraid of Hamad Hospital if you want to stay in Qatar for the birth. I had an excellent experience there with my 3rd child. Unbelievably inexpensive as well.

So quite alot of insurance doesn't cover maternity even if you get pregnant after you get cover? Might be better to stay at home. If it was a straightforward birth that would be fine but incase of emergencies it seems like costs could rise.

It depends on what type of health insurance your husband's company provides. I know that Qatar Airways medical insurance definitely does not cover maternity. The govt-run Hamad hospital is free and is supposed to be very good, and if Sidra ever opens it will specialise in women's health/maternity.
