Luggage Weight Question

Apologies if this is a silly question.

If weight allowance is 1 bag per person @ 23kg, and there are two passengers travelling but only carrying one bag @ 30kg, is this allowed?

Or do you have to take two bags and separate the luggage.

Thanks.

KLM stipulate one bag of up to 23kg. If you took two bags each weighing no more than 11kg each, you would still be charged for an extra bag. You really do need to check the policy of your airline (then check again).

Emirates don't stipulate one bag - I nearly always end up bringing back extra bags as well as our cases and have never been questioned as long as they all add up to the total and obviously no one bag exceeds the maximum bag weight... but that's no help to the OP !! lol Last year between 4 of us with 30 kgs each our total luggage weighed exactly 120 kg !! lol edited by Doubting Thomas on 31/07/2014

Baggage handlers cannot lift bags greater than 32kg, they must go as freight. For bags over 23kg they require specialist handling and must be labelled as 'heavy'. Some airlines will impose a charge for this, British airways charge £40. As far as I'm aware this is for handling of the bag not for extra weight. An airline may be able to check in two peoples bags as one single bag but this could be difficult depending on the computer system they are using. The bag will actually only be labelled with one passenger's name. Emirates is a 30kg allowance in economy in any case.

The reason for the baggage weight limit per bag is to limit the weight a baggage handler would have to lift at one time.

Depends on the airline. Emirates are usually ok with one bag under and one over. Airlines like Swiss however - totally paranoid about it! We were forced to unpack things from one bag and put in another to even the weight.

Most airlines have a maximum weight per bag and it should say on your booking, also if it says one bag only then the maximum weight applies to each bag. Emirates don't stipulate number of bags only weight so you can mix them up into any combination as long as you don't go over the total weight for number of passengers. We flew BA this time and it said one bag each up to 23 kgs..

We had a similar situation - one bag under was under, the other 2 kg over - they asked us to unpack at check-in and redistribute.

Thanks - I can't see any mention of it on the airline's website but will ask them.

It depends on who you are flying with and where to. To/from Uk usually a bag up to 32kg is allowed (Emirates). You can pool to one bag if you are both on the same booking with same ref number. Best to check on your airlines website. edited by dally on 28/07/2014
