Does a correspondence course count for a study visa?

My friend's 21 year old son has returned to Dubai to stay with his parents. Has spent the last few months trying to find a horticultural job with no luck so has decided to embark on a two year horticultural course which is purely online through an Australian university.

At the moment he is doing a visa run every month. Does anyone know if he would qualify for a study visa, given that his course is only through correspondence and that he physically doesn't attend a college? Are there any other visas that could allow a young expat male to remain resident here?

Could you imagine how many people would be in UK / Canada / US if you could be a student while studying in another country!!!

You would have to be a full-time UAE student, as PP says. I do think you can get 3 months visas but not sure. You would have to check.

This visa is only available for study in the AE and needs to be applied for by the AE university, not the parent, no?

Can't he look into getting a job? At 21, he should be more gainfully employed than an online course. He could surely get hired by a golf course or something ...
