My OH just got this travel notification from his company - Iraq As a precautionary measure in response to intensified militant activity a temporary restriction has been placed on all travel to the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Travellers to XXX projects in Iraq must check with the relevant Security Manager or Group Security prior to making any travel arrangements. Any other travel to the country will be assessed on a case by case basis and will need to be demonstrably business critical. edited by pollydxb1 on 23/09/2014 Exactly, this is the point i am making. . edited by Lolacat on 23/09/2014

eeee the thought of my hubby traveling there makes me nervous, god forbid but maybe ensure hubby has some type of life insurance in place, touch wood, but seriously consider it if he doesn't have it already, especially in high risk places like that, he will be fine-it's just you never know; wrong place wrong time kind of thing. xx This was our thought, which is why we got Life Cover sorted ASAP

I really appreciate your support, he is working in MCB and in process to know the security precautions will be provided... With due respect you should be or your DH asking this information of your company security and embassy. Should your DH have any concerns then he should be bringing them up with his company. The region can change daily so expatwoman in this case is perhaps not the best place to source information. Actually given that there are clearly people on here, whose DH's are working on ground there and in the security and military, it's the 'perfect' place to get insider info. Nonsense, insider info can not be posted here and the point stands that the region is changing on a daily basis therefore it is up to the company to report on security not here. Excuse me? Oh so people working there on a daily basis, doing CP work for companies and military operations don't know what's going on? - Riiiiiiiiight! You can certainly give a good gauge of what's going on. No need to be so negative. edited by FairyDust on 23/09/2014

I won't say it gets any easier, you just have to accept it as part of their roles. Erbil / Basra it makes no difference as long as the security is in place.

Don't be so negative Lolakitty - of course EW is the fountain of all knowledge.... i mean who would think to look on the US (reactionary) or UK (far too chilled) Foreign office websites for country warnings or updates when we have EW? The mind boggles..........!

True, but it's always nice to know that other peoples DHs go there on a regular basis safely. Exactly. I doubt the OP's DH is relying on EW, even though we are quite a happening and newsy bunch. :)

DH was there a few weeks ago for work. Security at hotels and airport very high, they were escorted throughout the visit with personal security staff. He said he felt safe (isn) there. edited by mum2girls on 23/09/2014 edited by mum2girls on 23/09/2014

Internet connectivity and cellular phone coverage is rather spotty at the moment. So you might not be in touch as much as you want to be while he is there.

Yes, it's more or less safe in Erbil. But we can provide him with a local security guard and/or armored vehicle if he'd feel safer. I nearly needed one of those last night..... ;)

Erbil is a safe zone. Put it this way, all the military guys take off their flack jackets etc and head to the bar - yes they have some. Although, it would be prudent if he had someone as close protection just in case. People are twitchy. Just don't get lost and walk into the 'wrong' house. Everyone carries weapons.
