Hey all,
and Happy new years !

So I had really bad tooth pain over the weekend, and I needed a dentist, after searching on here I saw many of you had recommended Dr. Madhu in Karama, so my husband took me there yesterday, after an x-ray he said I need a root canal, he did something for the time being which I think just a small filling or something, as he did not have time and we went for an emergency appointment - I was charged 300 AED.

So he explained that I will need a root canal, and he said it will cost 1600 AED + 200 AED if there is a 4th Canal rather than 3. also I will need to pay for a crown after which starts from 800 AED.

so total 2400-2700, plus the 300 we paid yesterday.

Is this the ''going'' rate for a root canal? nearly 3000 AED for 1 root canal?

I also read about some of you mentioning that its best to get a second opinion on root canals here as many dentists recommend it unnecessarily, but I guess that means I will need to pay for another check up/x-ray for the tooth?

Can anyone recommend a dentist that can do a good job and isn't charging that much? :(

[b'>Hi,I checked on other forums and I found Al Abqari Dental Clinic there having very good reviews. It's in Sharjah, in Buhaira corniche road.So I gave it a try.At the moment they even offer you discounts for a month or so.My root canal on my molar was only 750 Dhs + porcelain crown 600 Dhs.And because he had a promotion I did a teeth whitening as well- for only 400 Dhs.Wow.Recommend to all who want to have quality with low prices.;)

Some dentists charge even more, I know there are some dentists in Deira and Satwa that charge less but don't know anyone. Maybe some ladies here do.

Dr Sophie de Cort - she's a specialist, only does root canals.

I recently have a new crown, it costs me 2,200 for the crown and 1,200 for the root canal (+300 for discounted filling) I find it also pricey but they accept my insurance so I guess it's just okay for me. However, I am surprised with their root canal procedure now, it only took like less than 30mins! They told me they're using new technology. Just amazing!

I agree that "you get what you pay for" isn't always applicable :) However, I know that there´s a difference in the treatment you receive when the dentist have different technologies. I've too seen Sophie de Cort and she has both 3D X-ray and a Microscope.. And from what I understand from different dentists that I've been talking to it makes a huge difference when it comes to the prognosis and diagnostics. I would highly recommend Dr. Sophie but I'm sure you can get treatment cheaper if you're willing to compromise on accessibility and technologies used :) Her charge for my molar was 3000 AED and I paid roughly 4000 AED to my dentist for the crown.

I've had root canal at Nicholas and Asp and with Dr Madhu over the years. The last was with Dr Madhu 2 years ago and he had to sort out a tooth which had been broken and then bodged several times (not by him!). I ended up having 3+ hours of treatment over 3 sessions before he was the first person to see that one of the roots had a hairline crack which was why it was still uncomfortable - I was only charged for the first appointment! He also advised me to go for the cheaper crown on another tooth as the bone had been affected by a series of temporary fillings done by several dentists on another root canal - he said to get the more expensive one if this one hadn't moved in 5 years. His prices are reasonable, I can't remember what I paid N&A for the original root canal 10+ years ago but I'm sure it was more than Dr Madhu's quoting now. I'm not saying that I wouldn't go to N&A but I trust that Dr Madhu wouldn't do anything unnecessary. My children both see him too and he's been great with them.

I would say that's a reasonable price for a root canal and also a crown. However, if you want a second opinion I can recommend Dr. Hamdy at the German Dental Centre on JLT - 04 449 5335. DH and I both go there and if he hasn't changed his pricing structure in the last six months, he doesn't charge for a consultation, plus his prices are very reasonable. DH had a root canal and subsequent crown at his last visit and I think it was 2,400 altogether. I had a root canal and crown at German Dental Centre Dec 2013/Jan 2014 and the final bill came to 5800 it was paid over three instalments during treatment and included him bringing a specialist to do the root canal. There are two German Dental Clinics on JLT, one of which is in Tiffany Tower and called German Dental and Neuromuscular Clinic. Dr. Hamdy, who is an oral surgeon and a special implantologist, is in the HDS Business Centre tower. He has done two root canals for DH so just wondering if there was a particular reason another surgeon was called in. It was def Dr Hamdy and he said it was because it was one of my back teeth with two roots and needed a specialist. She was very good and gentle and I don't have any complaints about the service I received I was just posting my costs as reference for the OP.

I don't doubt your dentist is great, Villa, but plenty of other dentists are also great, they just don't charge exorbitant rates for whatever reason. Dr. Madhu just happens to be recommended on this forum a lot (miracle we can still get appointments with him anymore!) I have friends that go to Sharjah that won't even tell me who their dentists are for fear of exposing treasure and having an empty chest :) I used to feel like you say, you get what you pay for. But the thing is you don't always get what you pay for. Dubai seems chock full of professionals charging exorbitant rates because they [i'>can[/i'>, not because they are [i'>that good[/i'>.

My DH had a very different outcome with Nicholas & Asp. I think it very much depends on the dentist concerned. He had root canal treatment which was partially covered by our insurance and when he went back for the second and third time because he wasn't happy it was put right free of cost

Hi Figs, Try and see how much they will try to rob you at Nicolas and Asp, then you'll understand the real value of Dr. Madhu:) At Nicholas and Asp, you are just another brick to the wall of their summer houses for those senior -the ones closed their retirements- dentists. I had quite a complicated dental issue recently, long story short I am heading back to my home country for the treatment. With Nicholas and Asp I ended up with an aprox cost of 19 K AED for 3 root canals -among which I just need 1or 2 of them-, 5 crowns -which I don't need at all-, 1 dental operation -in which they don't understand the main problem there-.. I am so surprised by those who are going to Nicolas and Asp, they must've not seen a serious dental care and service in their lives! Such a fake clinic!

Dr. Madhu is the only dentist I've seen here for basic cleanings + I had a root canal with him. He charged me 1600, same as OP, assuming I had 3 canals. The first session didn't sort it. I wound up having a 4th canal, too, which he sorted on a 2nd session, but I was still having pain after the local anesthetic wore off. He put a temporary filler on, again, and told me to come back. The 3rd session, was done without numbing so he could poke around and let my pain dictate where to look, (sucked!) and thankfully, he found a 5th canal. There was no extra charge, so perhaps he has adjusted his prices. I feel this is justified, as it is a lot more work. Crowns, same quote, they started at 800 and went up to 2000, which I believe is for full porcelain. Quite a deal if you ask me. In fact, I'm embarrassed to admit--I still haven't gotten the crown and need to get it taken care of this month while I still have a tooth :(

Thanks Di@DXB and amelia, I will try and see if Dr. Hamdy will do a free consultation, I actually planned to go to him too but we tried to ring them yesterday few times and no response so went to Dr. Madhu. I will double check with Dr. Hamdy as he is just across the road from me in the Marina. thanks again

I was a patient of Dr Madhu for many years, up to last summer when I had a root canal and crown he was way less expensive than any other dentist I tried for the same work. 800 for a crown is not over expensive at all actually, I was quoted over 5k elsewhere and Dr Madhu did mine for at least half that price.
