Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to Expat Women in need of some advice and friends :)

I'm a 24yo single girl from England who moved here a week ago.

When I accepted my job, I was told that I would be put up in a hotel for the first 2 months and then 'the girls at work would help me find a place as that's what they've all had to do' within that time. The day before I left, I was sent an email from my manager saying that I would only be in the hotel for a week now as they had found me an 'apartment' to live in straight away where some of the other girls from work live. I thought 'great - saves me the hassle' - until I went to visit it this weekend. I was absolutely appalled and came out in tears. It was like a clean Indian slum. No bigger than a matchbox and I wish I was over exaggerating, I am still in the hotel but move in to the '**** shack' as I am calling it, on Friday. Sorry for the life story... :)

So, basically I am looking for a flat mate. I have applied for places on my own but my budget only just scrapes the barrel for what I need.

My budget is 4000-5000dh a month, and I am looking for someone who could match that so that we would have 8000-10,000 a month for somewhere quite decent.

Ideally, I would love someone British/American or very fluent in English between the ages of 20-30, fun, good sense of humour, and likes to socialise and go out, cleanliness/tidiness/hygiene is necessary. I need to be as close to Al Karamah as possible for work (no more than 10-15 min drive away.)

Also, I am looking for new friends in Abu Dhabi, unfortunately the girls at work are very clicky and haven't been the kindest of people to me, but I am remaining positive and keeping a smile on my face as I really want to make this work.

If you know anybody who would be interested, please share this with them, or any advise for me on where else I could share this post then please do. Thanks xx

Thanks xx Unfortunately you choice of location differs from mine.....I'm currently looking for an expat who would want to share my space with me ...as I've got this big master-bedroom in JBR near the walk..... Big enough for two people.....but looking for just a room mate- a kind pleasant jovial and respectful roommate. Hope you've found a place now

Hopefully you found better accommodation even though so deem is a lovely area. I live in al karamah and its mostly villas there. Huge villas where sheikhs and VIP people live. I am not one of them though lol. I've seen many expat women sharing a villa next to ours ( Brits and Americans and some other Europeans). I guess you can get your own room and bath for your budget. If you need any help or have any questions hit me up :)

I don't think I'm much help with the 'flat share' unless you can wait all that time :) but I would be eager to find out how you get on! What work are you doing out there? The girls don't sound too nice, keep positive!! Fingers crossed for you x

the newer buildings are much smaller than others.. have a look at the older ones from adcp in tourist club area or hamdan etc, but they will not be the nicest one, and finding a 1 bed/studio are in short supply hence why you pay a premium.... you will not find in karama as thats an expensive part of town.

Welcome :) I'm also new and just arrived a week ago - is this your first expat experience? I live in Al Reem in a tiny apartment - you just have to be creative about how you use your space! There are so many good ideas online for decorating a small room or apartment. It's all going to be okay!! I agree with the others' advice - if you can muster up the courage to stay in your given accommodation, you can rest assured you will be in a safe area, close to your work, around many other expats and you can even go to the expat women coffee meet up at La Brioche...there is also a ladies walking group around Al Reem on Mondays at 6pm - hunt around on facebook for the community there, it's good to get out when you are new somewhere. Don't hole yourself up! Good luck, deep breaths and focus on creating a cozy, familiar room you can lounge about in in your new apartment so you don't feel too homesick.

And forgot to add, to make friends, there are lots of facebook groups or meet up groups for people with similar interests/age range. Do a search, and good luck with finding new friends to hang out with.

If the apartment comes with the job, my advise would be to take it for the first year while you have a look around and get used to life here. Can you decorate it so it looks nice and homely? The problem with rushing to find someone to share with at this stage is you do not know many people and you could end up with someone you hate living with. Take time to know people and team up to rent with someone you get along with. Another thing is you have not finished your probation period. Do not make any big financial commitment until you are confirmed in the job.

Hi Welcome to Abu Dhabi I live on Reem Island when I was looking for an apartment I was surprised at how small some of the apartment were. I can't help you out with your search but if you go to abudhabiwomen forum it gets more traffic and someone there might be able to help you. I wish you luck with your search

Are you in a studio?? Just move in, get to know the city, and the surroundings. When I first moved to Abu Dhabi many years ago I was given an apartment in the tourist club area - I was shocked but made the most of it for a few months before I made the decision to move to a nicer area. Al Reem is a great area, but you might want to move somewhere different or stay there. Be a little more open minded about the kind of flat mate you are looking for, get to know people and make friends. You might meet the perfect flatmate that way, or get a house share. Have a look on Dubizzle for adverts. Just remember you are brand new, there are so many new things going on, give everything a chance to settle, the girls at work might seem clicky, but they might just be getting used to the new girl. By the way was the hotel apartment in your contract? And was the duration stated? Try to find a facebook group that you would fit in with and ask on there. Good luck!

The 'apartment' is like a prison cell. It is ridiculously tiny.

I have just Googled i and it comes up as 'one of the best areas for expats to live. World class healthcare and facilities!' What makes it so bad for you, is there a lot of construction going on, or is it not well organised/ You say that it is clean...........!
