There is absolutely nothing wrong with you checking. In fact most reputable jewellery shops will go out of their way to ensure that the customer is comfortable that their diamond hasn't been swapped. I'm surprised that you would leave a sizeable diamond in the care of a shop at all, usually if you need to get a stone fitted, fixed, etc, the shop will take you into their factory so that you can see the work being done in front of you.
