For all the Aussie ladies here..
We might be relocating to adelaide in near future. Can you give me an idea about how the Medicare system works in Australia? How good or bad is it? Particularly in adelaide? Do you get prompt and proper treatment? Or are you treated rubbish unless you have a private medical insurance?

One of our friends are having quite a nightmarish time in New Zealand (Auckland) after a recent miscarriage so we are quite anxious to know how things are in Australia? Particularly adelaide for maternity, dental and peadiatric things.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all your replies. What I want to know is if they do enough tests while getting treated as a public patient? My friend has been hospitalized thrice just for emptying her cervix after miscarriage. Each time they discharge her without ultrasound and make excuses why it is not required when she demands to have it done to make sure everything is clear? also, is a private insurance in australia..comparable to a private insurance here in Dubai? Do you get easy and quick access to a specialist? And tests? And do you get a say in your treatment plan? Over here if I am prescribed a treatment and I am not 100% sure of it , I can seek a second opinion. Is something like that possible in a public healthcare system there ? Thanks once again. Sorry for so many questions..but we have not experienced a public healthcare system before.

Hi, Will you be having a baby? After living abroad for a few years, and seeing the various hospitals in Dubai and India (I was looking for the same treatment we get in australia), I wasn't impressed. I went back to Australia, on Medicare, public patient - and I got the best treatment. I was so happy! I had both babies on Medicare! I'm from WA so I'm not sure about Adelaide. My pregnancy wasn't complicated - so those are the two main things. The hospital I was at was KEMH, the biggest and well-equipped in WA. St John of Gods (fancy private hospital) was one option for us initially. I looked into it, it was nice. Rooms were pretty. etc etc. I knew from the beginning my pregnancy wasn't complicated, but anything could go wrong last minute. After much research, I came to the conclusion that if something did go wrong last minute, SJOG will send me to KEMH because the private hospitals weren't as well-equipped. So I went with KEMH from the beginning. The other difference was that at KEMH, I was seen by the midwives, and looked after by the midwives who were all so, so so lovely! I think if you're a private patient (which you can be at public hospital? Who knew?!) then you get your ob/gyn? A private patient may have more info on that. Good luck
