Hi,

My husband had been diagnosed with a herniated disc three years back and the doctor had prescibed physiotherapy after which he was ok and didn't get any pain. Two days back he started getting spasms of pain. We were advised by the neurosurgeon at Zulekha hospital to go for an MRI and surgery. But I want to get a second opinion.

Could anyone please recommend a good orthopedic surgeon or Doctor to me.

Thanks!

Hi Brwneydgirl, My husband recently had surgery to replaced a severely herniated cervical disk at the Medcare Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital on Sheikh Zayed Road. His surgeon was Dr. Nikola Vagic and we highly recommend him. In my husband's case, his disk herniation was so severe that surgery was the only option - physiotherapy did not work and leaving the disk untreated would have eventually led to nerve damage. Dr. Nikola was very professional and provided us with excellent pre- and post-op care. We are quite relieved that the surgery progressed smoothly - the prospect of any surgery (particularly spinal surgery) can be quite daunting. I hope your husband receives the care and treatment he requires and is pain free very soon.

Hi, I highly recommend you Dr. Ashfaq Konchwalla. I had my first surgery with him in 2010 for an Achilles tendon rupture and on September 16th I had an Knee Arthroscopy. He is in Medcare Umm Suqeim and I do have full trust in him. he is an excellent surgeon and all his patient are special to him.

Hello my husband was diagnosed with the same about 8 years ago. He is 43 and quite fit. We manage the pain episodes and he manages his exercise to build strength in the back. We have been to see specialists in Europe and Australia and none of them recommend surgery. Surgery is a Mammoth response to what can be a 'mouse' issue. It might alleviate it for ever but the back is also apparently a very tricky area to operate upon. The issue I found here is they don't know how to treat it. I had a terrible episode at the London Clinic on Al Wasl or Jumeirah rd. They kept telling my husband to sit down (!!!!) which with a back stuck in oblique is just so inappropriate and naive. So, here is my advise as this is what i did: engage in ongoing exercise and physio to keep the back nice and strong have an emergency pain plan - this is standard across the world except in Dubai of course. My hubby has: cortisone injection and valium or similar pain killers. Rest. Then physic. When pain is over resume exercise. It is one of those things that can be managed or at least that is what my husband says Good luck
