Hi. Can you please tell me about how long it took to recover? What were your exact symptoms? I have been suffering with tmj derangement for 1.5 yeras ago. Tried chiropractor, osteopath, expensive nightguard. They all helped a little. but my bite has changed, the pain/swelling still there and it hurts everyday. Two surgeons recommended surgery, and one surgeon is against it alltogether. Says I need to keep managing with conservative treatment unless its just unbearable/ I am tired of it and want better quality of life If its ok with you, please email me, so I can set up a call with you to discuss in detail. 30 mins of your time. Please and thank youo, im very confused and nervous about surgery email - [email protected]

Hi, littlepenguin! I came across your post from awhile ago, so apologies if it's outdated! I am suffering from TMJ and having seen several dentists already, not to mention a jaw doctor years back, I'm still unable to find anyone who knows what they're talking about. The maxo/jaw specialist doctor who I saw in 2010 did say to avoid any surgery (as extreme last resort, which I agree to), and that I need to somehow manage it through anti-inflamms, night guard, and life style. All of the latter I did via my dentists - including laser therapy, which was a joke and did not work, unfortunately - and now the problem persists. I do wear a guard but it doesn't really help. Have you resolved your TMJ issue? And if so, would you please be able to share any tips in the forms of docs/remedies prescribed? I am happy to go see the right doctor (as it's all so expensive here...). Thanks so much!

It was covered by insurance, but the Dr. told me around 20.000 DHS , I have already paid more than 50000 for dentists, Maxillofacial , Physiotherapy, chiropractors without the insurance cover. only...
Maybe you don't need a surgery, unless you have severe pain .

Dear All, I was following your home page especially for TMJ treatment even I tried many options that were posted on this wall (all of them) bite adjustment, electro & physiotherapy, osteopathy, removing 4 teeth in the upper jaw and lower jaw thinking that I have pain because of them. after more than six years suffering, in pain 24/7, none of the medicines could give relief, by coincidence I came to know that a doctor in Al Ain is expert in TMJ, PS. after seeing more than 10 doctors but couldn't help me out , TMJ has nothing to do with the bite or teeth missing in the mouth, they affect the TMJ but they are not the cause of the pain , TMJ is Disc+muscles+ bite , the main problem is the disc. Two weeks ago, I had my arthroscopic TMJ surgery in Al Ain NMC hospital, was done By Dr. Vikram and I’m finally relief from my pain, my mouth opening is back to normal, I can move my tongue inside my mouth without any pain. I have still to undergo some physiotherapy sessions and wearing a splint, but I am so happy that I have done it.

I'm about to get braces again to re align my jaw but i'm not hopeful. Just waiting for a huge success story at this point.

I've seen Aziza Zubeidi at the osteopathic health centre for neck pain and headaches and she picked up on my TMJ issue right away. She's provided a lot of relief but constantly reminds me that if the underlying issues aren't addressed and managed by myself (misaligned teeth, stress etc.) then the problem won't really go away permanently. I've since recommended her to so many people who've not been disappointed. If she can't help you with her treatment at least she'll direct you to someone who can.

Hi WAQ I had a terrible experience some years ago when the clicking of my TMJ got really really bad, and then one day whilst eating a piece of bread, the disc popped forwards out of the joint and wouldn't go back in ... For a couple of weeks I couldn't open my mouth more than a finger width. It was awful and so painful!! In the time (and in the lead up as well, when the clicking was really bad) I saw three dentists who were 'experts', had a sleep study, was told to have surgery to correct my nasal breathing (I worked for an ENT at the time, and he said there was nothing to correct) got told I needed braces to realign my teeth, had anaesthetic injected into the joint so that they could try and manipulate it, and finally was booked in for a manipulation under sedation. I also had two mouth guard things made which not only cost a fortune, but did nothing and I think, made things worse. The whole experience was very distressing and has made me very cynical about any claims the dental profession make about their expertise in dealing with TMJ disorders. In spite of what their advertising material might say, there doesn't appear to be much evidence for the things they suggest, nor any formal qualifications that make someone a 'TMJ specialist'. At the time, with increasing desperation, I did a fairly thorough review of the medical literature and the conclusion was basically that none of these interventions are better than placebo. The thing that finally helped me, luckily before I had the procedure under sedation (which I was very nervous about because I didn't want to make things worse...I did not go through with it) in the end, was physiotherapy with someone who had an interest in TMJ. She did massage in my mouth, and showed me some techniques to do at home. I also had a small cap thingy put on my back molar which changed the angle of my bite slightly and alleviated some of the pain (this was done by an oral surgeon as a temporary measure whilst he ordered me some $2000 splints, but years later I still have it and I never got the splints!). Sorry for the essay - your gut instinct is that the advice you've been given is a bit off, and I would go with your gut.

Hiya, Oh it was just a few sessions, but because I knew the cause of it, once the braces came off everything was fine. But it's certainly not a pleasant experience.

I've had TMJ before, when I had braces which caused me to grind my teeth at night - very painful. All the muscles were tight and stressed, so I had some osteopathy treatments to relax it all. This was a long time a go. I would suspect that most osteopaths will be able to assist, but you probably need someone good at cranial osteopathy. Are you stressed? Teeth grinding? Never heard of TMJ being linked to sleep apnea, but apparently it does happen. You could try the Excellency centre in Downtown, as they're very good with most kinds of osteopathy. Thanks for the response, FD. I'm glad you were able to sort out your issues. And again it seems like osteopathy may be a path to follow! Just for my own knowledge, how many sessions did you require to get rid of this? Regarding stress, to be honest I don't feel like I'm too stressed out but who knows, I may be clenching my jaw without noticing! Hard to describe this. I was just checking Dr. Bassam Husain's background and he does seem to have studied cranial osteopathy so it may be worth a shout to see him indeed! Will welcome any additional comments / experiences from anyone!

Hello all, I've been having some pain (dull ache) around my TMJ area and am looking on some options on where I can or should go. Just to give you some background: I've searched for Neuromuscular Dentists here in Dubai and could only come up with Dr. Jocelyne Charest. I've visited her twice but to be honest, I'm not too convinced with her at this point in time. Upon my first visit, she's said I should consult with her recommend ENT specialist if my breathing is OK and whether I need to get my deviated septum corrected. I did consult the doctor and he said not required. I double-checked with another ENT specialist just in case and he said the same. Then I went back to Dr. Jocelyne and she is still insisting on getting a Sleep Study done (not covered in my insurance) to ensure my breathing is good since she's convinced I have Sleep Apnea, and that I need to wear a mouth device while sleeping for the rest of my life! To be honest, I'm not even sure how she came to that conclusion without any report nor me even showing Sleep Apnea symptoms (which I've also checked with a Pulmonologist)! Has anyone had any similar experiences? Anyway, I'm not here to bash any doctor but just wanted to seek any advice that I can get. Upon my research I saw some people on this site mention that Osteopathy treatments have helped, however, no name of the doctor was provided. Therefore, can you please shed any knowledge on this or point me to the right direction? I've come up with Dr. Bassam Husain at Osteopathy Dubai who works on TMJ related issues. Appreciate your help!
